What cliches and tropes annoy you when it comes to content creation?

in defence on the english thing they actually adress it in the movie, the scene where their checking them into the prision in the panels it says that Star Lord has a universal translator inplant (it's hard to see but it is there) also the humanoid characters is more that the animation budget would go through the roof if they didn't do that ^-^ dosen't excuse them but puts the problems into context

Yeah it's most prominent in Japanese media for sure, but I had seen it in a few western titles as well (The more obscure gender bending movies kinda deal, I really liked those as a kid for reasons that are obvious to me now) It's also something that I think/hope is being phased out? As I saw it a lot more often as a kid than I do now. Regardless I still hated it every time I saw it.

This is something I've encountered in a lot of YA books lately, and perhaps not by conincidence these books are all self-pub or indie press pub: the MC is established as a competent, skilled and careful person, and yet in order to start the plot of the book the MC has to do something dumb, clumsy or rash. This annoys me because while people do make mistakes in real life, these characters never make a mistake up until they need to for plot reasons. Therefore the plot feels forced and the MC's characterization is then rendered kinda moot. Their competency becomes what TVTropes calls an "informed attribute."

I also generally don't like easy to guess twists. I like twists but not when they're so obvious. I try to make the twists in my stories not obvious, but then that has in the past made them so oblique that no reader enjoys them. It's hard to strike a balance of a good twist.

These are my pet peeves, most are romance tropes since they're everywhere, lol:

1) The main female protagonist who strongly dislikes the guy for no real reason, only to find out "hey, maybe he's not so bad after all!! O.O" Duh. I can understand if he's kinda a jerk, but if he just bumped into you on your way to lunch??

2) That one nosy friend who can't mind their own business. Usually different for males and females, but equally annoying:

Woman: Usually like the bff from a chic-flick who INSISTS that her friend's life is incomplete without love despite her friend already being independent, employed, healthy and otherwise successful and happy.

Man: The seemingly laid-back friend who warns our plucky protagonist that they should back off from their almost-lover because they "live in different worlds" or "will only cause you pain." Who asked you?!!

3) In action movies when the cool hero and the female lead do those horribly clichéd and unoriginal power games to be "coy." Puns may have worked for James Bond, but now it's just cringeworthy! ><

4) When the world is in danger, and our young protagonist is the ONLY one who can save us. Bonus points if they're born with a weird birthmark or mysterious artifact from dead parent. (Why couldn't the parent save us? O.o)

Forcing anything for the sake of the plot is usually lazy writing, I find, something I myself have been guilty of but I'm actively trying to avoid.

For the guess twists, I always try to guess what's going to happen later in a film/game/etc, and if I guessed it correctly, I get a little disappointed. Else the more surprised I am, the better. Which is why I enjoy series like Rick and Morty, given how unpredictable the writers tend to be.

@9outofPen The "Chosen One" cliche has gotten very, very tiring over the last few years. Harry Potter did it well, because there was alot of turmoil due to Harry's birth, but it's a cliche that I think should be avoided. Unfortunately it's a cliche that's -somewhat- present in my graphic novel, but I'm trying to make things interesting by making it so that no one but a few of the villains know of the "Chosen one" , while everyone else just see the protag as another contractor. That's what I get for starting on the plot in my early teens. It's a trope I'll try my best to avoid in future projects, unless I'm making fun of it.

This is something I see in the Slice of Life/Romance/Teen Lit genre, where the characters are WAY too perfect. Really, (especially John Green) they seem to have no flaws, and if there are, they are downplayed so bad.
They're human, for f's sake. We're all flawed, and they too should be flawed.
And of course, the issue on plot.
There is almost NO plot in some of the other things I've seen, which is basically just "boy+girl". It gets nowhere.

"The whole plot is boy + girl" shows up even in the genre YA books I read. Seriously, if there are two MCs and one is a girl and one is a boy, they will ABSOLUTELY get together in the book. There is no mystery! Just for once I want to see a book with a male and a female MC when they don't get together.

Love triangles that's aren't actually love triangles! In other words, person A can't choose between person B or C. This happens especially in YA novels and harem anime.
How a REAL love triangle should be imo is the following:
Person A likes person B
Person B likes person C
Person C likes person A
Nobody is happy! Everything is tragic!

"I lied to you to keep you safe" is I think the trope I hate the most, followed closely by "I overheard part of a conversation out of context and got upset, and if only'd I'd stuck around a little longer I'd realize everything is actually okay."

Cartoonish villains. Like, would it kill Hollywood to make nuanced characters who happen to be bad guys? Would it kill them to show the real faces behind everything that's wrong with the world?

. . . maybe it would hit too close to home.

One trope I think sucks when not used right and can just be downright lame is the relate able villain. The villain who's backstory that keeps you, "Oh no that's tragic." I like it at times, but sometimes I just want a straight up crazy bad guy, who's just a dick.

Oh my god the number of cliches that annoy me! Most of you got it but one of the major things that are on my list but I absolutely hate is when movies don't match their culture they originated from. That one cracks my knuckles really takes the cake.

That and the whole boy + girl romance which irritates me because its not the only romance thats out there and no they dont have to instantly fall MAGICALLY IN LOVE. Love hurts- and sometimes you dont get the person you want. Show that in movies please ;w;

Many of my irks have already been listed, but I'll point out a new one that I've noticed and is starting to nag me a little.

In a w|w relationship the darker/poc one is portrayed as more masculine while her counterpart (usually lighter/white) is more feminine with traditional "girly" traits.

Been seeing this a lot in webcomics and general illustrations. Particularly the Knight and Princess trope and the darker woman is always the knight from what I've seen.

I reckon it's got to be when a male character basically stalks his female love interest until she gives in. It's lazy and it's eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeverywhere.

Speaking of which, there's actually an ad running on Tapas that makes my hackles rise every time I see it... It's the college one where the girl goes to a party and keeps hesitating over a one night stand.

This stuff is why I really like the TV series Community. It turns every trope on it's head. I'm sure some of you must've watched it.

Tropes I hate in generic media;

-The stupid cop who goes to a serial killers home alone, doesn't tell anyone where he's at, etc
- The girl who unexplainedly pukes at the start of the film is pregnant. ALWAYS.
- The white middle aged brown haired man who is the protag of every action movie / horror game
- When the bible is quoted, witchcraft is upon us (Mostly only in horror, though)
- Lady who only exists to fuel the protag's revenge campaign
- Girl gets a makeover of straight hair and no glasses. Instantly SAH PRETTY until she realizes that beauty was always inside her :'cccc
- "YOU'RE NOT MY REAL DAD" "I Love you...Real dad :("
- 'Murica and general propaganda & jesus

A few from BL.

-"Is it too strange to be with another man"(THE CRINGE IS SO REAL)
-"Should never date straight people" (This is the weirdest freaking trope)

• evil parents (like in "Do your homework or else!", totally astray from reality or "evil" in a sense that they don't allow their brat everything. That's not evil, that's parenting.)
• shallow characters
• also: shallow villains, villains who are just evil because of reasons! (I like villain with a solid backstory!)
• typical BL relationship, preferrably shy little bottom (student) falls in love with hot smexy top (teacher or school rep)
• the blonde girlie who can't use something more complex than a hair dryer if her life depended on it
• "You know, you love me!" - "No, I don't!" - "Yes, you do!" - "Okay! I love you!"
