Hey all! I recently started working on a new graphic novel, currently titled "Hecterians", it's about Universal Space Janitors, a space opera of sorts. I've started a blog where I'll be archiving my team's progress, which you can read here. I'll also upload some updates here! I won't get spammy as…
Agreed. Other side-characters also have weird colored hair, which we will be editing on the printed version of the comic. While I want my book to have some silliness to it, I don't want to have my characters have odd features unless it's explained, same goes for overtly-sexualized characters. That's…
I pitched Idyll Haven to DarkHorse a few years ago, and I was pleased to hear back from them. They stated that they'd be willing to look at my graphic novel once it's complete, although... I'm thinking of just going the self-publishing route. I'm not really comfortable with giving creative control…
When I work with an artist I make it very clear that it's OUR story, not just mine. I believe this makes a bond between the artist and the IP, as I want to make it so the artist actually enjoys working on our book. Echavez is a very talented artist, although he mostly draws in the manga format, thu…
[image] We always like to make the cover last, even though it's technically not the last page in our most recent chapter, it's still the last one we made, so I hope this counts!
People tend to associate certain design aspects with something that's already established, without taking into consideration that the character they're referring to was likely already based off of something else. This character is often compared to He-Man due to the hairstyle, I guess, but it was…
It's an incredible source of power, and like with all other forms of power, it can be used to accomplish great things, or destroy entire civilizations. Technology invented penicillin and computers, but also Mustard gas and the atom bomb. It's a perfect metaphor for the Ying-Yang. There is no ligh…
Too much sometimes. I feel like giving up sometimes, due to how expensive it is, and it's relative low engagement, and the fact that I still have 9-12 more chapters to produce before I finish this first book. It seems very daunting. But I'm still going to keep trudging on, until the comic's compl…
Forcing anything for the sake of the plot is usually lazy writing, I find, something I myself have been guilty of but I'm actively trying to avoid. For the guess twists, I always try to guess what's going to happen later in a film/game/etc, and if I guessed it correctly, I get a little disappoint…
"Why does Rineris have pink hair?" It was an accident.. I'm a bit color blind and the artist changed her hair from brown to pink for some reason, and I didn't notice until people started to point it out. This was especially embarrassing when I was showing my comic to some associates in Seattle, w…
8/10. Looks like something that could gut me in an instant!
Idyll Haven - Depression Metaphor. I've struggled with mental health issues since I was a toddler, and I've found that meditation and having strong connections with friends and family to be the best medicine. I've decided since to use my experience to tell Rineris's story through this graphic nov…
Oh god. I remember everyone was crazy about this title when I was a teenager. I used to play Maple Story, then WoW in my mid-teens, and in MS people were nuts about the series. Then I watched and... Uh, the writing left much to be desired.
Thankyou for mentioning it. As stated I'll be sure to avoid this trope in the future.
Marvel and DC are hit or miss for me. Guardians of the Galaxy, while having an excellent plot, has very humanoid aliens, which are quite literally just psychedelic-colored humans with strange accents. Also everyone speaks english. MARVEL PLEEZ. Batman's awesome, though. @Kura I notice this mo…
Oh I've given up on cinema almost entirely. I usually only see movies if friends invite me or if I don't have anything to do and I'm too tired to play games or write. Like you said, most cinema/TV sucks nowadays. It's become more commercial than art. Which is rather tragic to me.
Cliche's are usually a writer's lazy tactic to speed up the writing process to get a script out. Which is why it's so important to bide your time and write deep characters who aren't just cookie cutters of some existing trope.
I'm glad others agree in this regard
@IdiotWithPencil @Sanz Forced …
Dislike. They've become a bit of a cliche/trope and are too easy to write at the moment. Not to mention they tend to be, well, violent, which isn't a positive trait unless the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic environment.
I see, sorry about that! I guess I misunderstood. Best of luck!
You're not going to profit on youtube alone. Your best bet is to create merchandise once your IP's start to gain traction, go to events, etc.
Lazy cliches for a lazy audience, I suppose. Sadly these tropes sell, which is why Hollywood (and other industries) continue to make them. The dreadful "Emoji Movie" is considered one of the worst animated films to ever be produced, yet it made a ton of money due to people watching it out of familia…
Hello all! I've been writing my sci-fi comic since 2014, given that I grew up on Sci-fi, my favorites being BladeRunner, Alien, StarCraft, Megaman X series, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and many more. As of only a few years ago, though, I've started to look at sci-fi (and almost any other g…
If it's a following you're trying to get, I think your best bet is to draw fan-art and submit it to it's proper communities. Anything that's trendy at the moment (Overwatch, for example) is sure to make your audience grow rather quickly. I run a closed network of artists on my website, so if you'…
SmackJeeves, DeviantArt and LineWebToon. I uploaded some of my pages on instagram and I got a decent following there, as well.
Also this. Fan bases can be really, really annoying sometimes. (I'm looking at you, Overwatch...)
I've made a bow to keep my own personal beliefs and politics out of my work. However I see people as individuals, not as a label. If a villain happens to be trans/gay/etc, then that's just how the character is. Same applies to them being protags, anti-heroes, etc. I've designed a few LGBT charac…
Samurai Flamenco. Started out alright, then a guillotine gorilla shows up. It was a huge "WTF" moment for me and I simply couldn't enjoy the show after this.
Noted. I'll try to make the letters bigger on the next edition. And I'm very glad you like the art!
Hello all. Echavez (artist) recently finished Chapter III, and any feedback is more than welcome. These pages are technically just a draft for now. Once we move on to printing we'll apply some changes, some of which may be the result of feedback. You can read chapter III here. Thanks in adva…
As of late, I've been better, although bouts of depression jump on me from time to time. However I've been feeling like I want to give up on my graphic novel due to lack of engagement, and I think it has more to do with it's crappy quality than it's poor marketing. I don't know. I sometimes get go…
