What do people hate about your comic?

Haven't really received hate for it directly, but when my girlfriend shown one of her friends my comics, that friend of hers lashed at it all because he didn't like the style, and I was informed of the reaction.

I don't even have the time or patience usually to make it all fancy and detailed and non manga-ish.

As for hate among my readers, my comics haven't received any that I'm aware of.

I tried to put all these subtle hints about backstory and character motivations into the story, only to find that people were not only missing them entirely , but coming up with their own head cannons that were counter to mine.

THIS! I get this a lot. And they convince themselves and won't listen to what's actually being said!

I have had a few fair 'bad' things happen and people REALLY want the two mains to hit it off when they met, they did not. People despaired to no end! From laments to projecting THEY wouldnt do that, I had a handful of people actually go 'huh this might actually work out better than them instantly connecting'

as for the storytelling clarity issue, wow. right. I have comments saying I DONT GET IT when i feel ive been handholding and other times a reader accurately predict an entire chapter from an illustration and other readers will crack my own alphabet in hours of published pages. so .... i just dunno man, i dunno

Hate is not something we've really gotten (quite yet), but some of the stuff my team and I have gotten:

• We're telling a story of a black/multi-ethnic woman, and none of us are black or multi-ethnic. I think this concern is kind of fair from my perspective, as myself and my hubby are the-sun-reflecting-off-our-skin-will-blind-you white, and our creative partner is Asian. It's easy to see us and be suspicious of our intentions, in fact we kind of expect it. My team works to do our due diligence, research, talk to folks and spend a lot of time listening, especially when it makes us uncomfortable. The good news is we've had more people commend us for our narrative/character honesty and 'getting it right' than for giving us crap about not being the race of the main character in our story.
• Our text bubbles. In the past we had them colorful and semi-transparent but it made it hard for folks to read, and bubbles got confusing. Our first few chapters are a damn mess because none of us had any real understanding of text bubble rules outside of the very basics. Thankfully we've REALLY improved since then!
• Our posting schedule. Folks get REALLY sadfaced that we can't post more than one page a week, but our pages are seriously work intensive. Each one takes about 75 hours between three people. The buffer page struggle is real and until we're in a more comfortable spot there, we can only post once a week. Sometimes our readers get a treat with a double page post that features a splash on one end. Speaking of posting schedules...
• That our page release schedule drags the story out too long. Readers say we have great pacing when you can read it all at once, but the inevitable end comes and then the story just DRAGS in comparison. I think this is a REALLY fair critique, but it's not something we can really help right now. ^_^;;;

Oh yeah, another popular one I got for Raven Wolf was "why is this not porn?" "where is the porn?" "when are they going to fuck?" "Do you have a version with the sex?"

I guess if you draw a comic in an anthro style some people that read have high hope for smut implications or something???? I'm not sure. I never intended for it to be an adult comic, and the story never implies that there is going to be or should be porn/sex, but some people still think there will be or that it's missing???

It was because I had a bunch of unnamed Asian characters acting "mean" by Western standards. The characters were acting very hostile, and then there was a brief scene in which a mother harshly discourages her son when he talks about wanting to become [insert career choice]. But those behaviors are quite normal, or at least understandable, in Korean culture given the situation. So when people say those behaviors are ignorant and/or offensive, that offends ME because they're passing judgment on normal Korean behavior.

I'm not deeply offended or anything, but yeah. I feel like those people are pushing their own ideas of right and wrong, and not respecting that other people/cultures can have different ideas.

I think some of the Tapastic staff are also Korean, BTW XD

Someone has an issue with the fact one of my characters is wearing stockings cuz it was such a drastic skin change between the legs and the rest of her It took like ages to convince this person that these stockings existed

I like this thread! The first email I ever received pretty much told me to keep my day job, which I view as a rite of passage for an artist! The biggest beef was that my artwork was severely lacking, and looking back at my old comics, I can't disagree, although I've gotten better ever since. These days, it's the occasional joke that inadvertently bugs someone. Mostly because, while I take care not to intentionally offend ANYONE, sometimes I wind up writing something that raises a pair of eyebrows now and then. Oh, and did I mention the 100+ rejection slips I've collected over the ye:smile: ?

For my comic, mostly that people dont know what to feel about it. Is it supposed to be funny or sad? I think it can be both. Sadness can be funny. I still don't really know how to classify it.

I haven't had anyone say anything negative to me about Nocturne yet, but the thing I personally hate and have been self critical of has been the overall quality of the first chapter. This is my first shot at writing a comic pretty much ever, so I've already made pretty much every mistake in the book--wonky speech bubbles, awkward formatting, lazy backgrounds, inconsistent character drawings, boring panelling, etc. I drew all 40 pages of the first chapter at once about 5 months ago, before I released the comic publicly, and have been using the pages as my buffer.

I've been making a huge effort to make chapter 2 substantially better than the first chapter by studying and reading other comics, trying new techniques with my backgrounds and just practicing in general and I feel like the quality jump is pretty drastic--I'm hoping this won't be offputting for people. I plan on redrawing the first chapter entirely probably a year from now just because I know even just after a few months I can already do so much better with what I've learned, and I want to present my work in the best light I possibly can.

I feel this a lot too. I've heard a few times that my comic reads much better if you're reading the chapter in one sitting, rather than a page a week. Which is good considering I wrote my comic for print, but it makes me really wish I could update at least twice a week. But like with your comic, the pages are so labour/time-consuming that it's almost impossible to do unless I made my comic my sole priority. :<

really? I was wondering but I thought it was rude to ask to see if it was Westerners asking those things. You know I do understand that, I lived in Pusan/Busan for the longest time and that is very typical behavior for Koreans, my mom will tell me flat out if I gain any weight. and she actually did do the same thing with Career choices. I guess if they never had experience with it, they wouldn't know. I've had an American ask me "what do you have against Japan." the sad thing is.. all I did was respond "I'm not Japanese", when he kept asking me about Japanese Language, and culture. as if it was the same thing. but the sad part is he also believed Japan, Korea and China were the same thing, and that what was portrayed in comics, and movies for slice of life was actually how they all acted x.x"

I'm not sure if that's on the same line as you were talking about, but I do understand what you are talking about.

and that is wonderful! I think I was looking on the site to find Korean Artist and I thought someone was cause the style and they had Korean text, turns out they weren't, still I liked their comic so I subbed to it, the person was kind enough to let me know he wasn't Korean but I found it interesting he used the text. so it's been a bit hard for me to find them. i did notice the new spot-light comic, so I see there seemly are Koreans around the site. ^^

my comic hasn't been running for very long so i haven't had a lot of complaints but the main one is definitely "why is this episode so short?" i don't even want to honor that with a response tbh :/ it's my choice to make them that length and frequency, and honestly it's something i've asked for feedback on multiple times so the current method IS what readers wanted

On Webtoons I'm starting to just not care... :'D I can't win there in regards to the length of my episodes. My last update was 11 pages (Granted one was a title page, but that's still 10) and it still got a comment saying it was too short.

honestly, i dont think ive yet got to a point where ppl have broken past the 'its just starting out' politeness. that being said, many people when asked have pointed out struggling with the font; i use a kinda weird one for the specific speaker in the prologue and i'll admit its a pretty inaccessible font, but theres few that fit the intended aesthetic while being creative commons. either way, im looking for alternatives for later issues.

I also haven't gotten any hate but some people do really dislike a few things in the comic:
- Some people dislikeing a few characters, specifically the female lead, but in contrast some people LOVE her, and this was expected because I wrote her in a way which her actions may not be very 'likable' to some people. But this was mostly at the start of the comic.
- that the main 2 aren't together yet XDD which is fine but I hope people have a lot of patience

@60Six my episodes are around 20+ panels per episode and I get that comment too. So just don't worry about it no matter how long an update is they will say it XD

I've had people tell me that my story doesn't upload enough (despite updating at the time 2x a week with 3 pages each episode). These are people IRL who have never read a webcomic before, so I don't worry about this complaint too much.

I haven´t gotten that much criticism has of yet...
I´ve seen comments of shock and surprise by the dark turns I have given early on the series but nothing really negative aside from my early designs.

I always get the "I'm confused" in most chapters. I think it was because most readers don't get context clues that much, so I really need to spoon-feed information so they'll get it. I also suck at writing dialogues and transitions so there's that. Well, I hope to improve. I also have my favorite comment that I took with a huge grain of salt.

... I'm too old to be ready for this shit. Its too childish and you lack in a lot of skills, your script needs so much work -.- how do you block an author?

I'd love to get an editor to whip my ass but that costs money and I don't think its worth it for a trial webcomic...I cry every night I remember this, I'm laughing. (and lowkey dying)
