What do think of Tapas as a service?

As a reader I think the ease of access to a creator's profile and the notifications make it easier to access the content you're interested in, which is something I really appreciate!

@Rodimus13 you can link your comic to Patreon & [possibly] Ko-fi; the banner at the top, and the small banner/box/space at the bottom of your comic pages. Right now both of mine are inked to my Patreon page...as soon as I get an actual site going, I will link my top comic banner to my site and the bottom to my Patreon.

I feel like most of it's user base is creators so we don't have as many just straight up readers.

This misconception crops up occasionally, and I believe it's a result of using the forum frequently. The forum is dominated by creators, and if you're well known here you're going to attract fellow creators to your comic. It doesn't negate that fact that being able to attract creator support but not straight up readers is a problem for a lot of smaller comics. However the vast majority of Tapas users are readers, not creators.

I know there are statistics somewhere, but you can just look through the subs if varied comics and see it. (I'd say less than 10% of my subscribers are fellow creators, and I check occasionally)

Well that really sucks then cause almost all my subs are creators. I don't seem to have a lot of non creators on this venue.

I don't feel like I have strong input on Tapas as a user since I really approach it as a creator. The app and desktop design has been changing a lot recently to balance community comics with premium content better, and I like what I've seen but it's still in progress and I haven't used it much.

As a creator, though, I think ink and ad sense is way more accessible than the ad program on webtoons. We also have the ability to schedule, and users can see when a future episode is scheduled for, which is nice. One of the best things about Tapas is their mature content policies, which while still limited are more reasonable than almost everywhere else. Especially since you can mark specific pages as mature rather than the entire comic, which is helpful to sensitive readers that might enjoy a mature comic but want to be warned if certain kinds of content it skip it.

we also have the gif support that allows for animated comics, so that's another bonus for Tapas that I know webtoons lacks. However that's probably not a Tapas only thing.

I think our ability to find comics on Tapas still needs improvement, but I'm happy enough here to give Tapas the time to figure it out. But that would logically be an issue of comparison based on your criteria.

Out of curiosity, why're you comparing a pirating site with official ones?

Attracting an audience, even when you have quality content, is one of the hardest things to do on any site. Having a lot of creators following and supporting you isn't a bad thing, though, and it can potentially lead to its own opportunities to attract more readers. i think you have a quality comic, though, so if you keep working on your marketing and pushing forward, you'll probably tap into your audience eventually. It's always a long game. XD

But yeah, I don't want you to think having a lot of creators is a bad thing! Those are still legit readers, and bonus, they're likely more insightful ones as they're actively interested in the art of storytelling. It's just a natural aspect of being able to directly interact with people here.

I'm more interested in the quality of service from a readers perspective since that's one of the prominent arguments for piracy.
I figure I'd try cutting out the moral debate and focus on the technical aspects.
And I chose Mangadex because it seems to have a variety of readers in mind and knows how to work best for each of them.
At least based on the options here.

(and it's also supported by users to keep it ad free which I've almost never seen any other site do, which also makes the debate of piracy even more grey because this seems to be a service people are willing to pay for directly, whether it be to the site or the translation groups themselves)
But then you also have to consider how much of this is actually necessary and that's where the comparison comes in.

i haven't been using tapas for very long, in fact i just got my account a few days ago, but i am an avid user of webtoons - and one thing i do like over it is being able to schedule episodes far ahead - it saves me a lot of trouble especially when i'm going to be on vacation in a month! something i don't like however is that it only allows 40 files in one episode; the episodes i've done so far are pretty long and i've had to split them into 2 parts TT_TT i guess that's my fault though, i did draw my comic with the plan of only uploading on webtoons

i haven't really gotten around to reading any tapas comics so no opinion on the department yet.

One thing I really REALLY wish Tapas would do is... separerate free comics from premium. Like Webtoons does.

What I like about Tapas is the community and the ink option to tip.
What I don't like about Tapas is the bugged app (previous version was so good >.<) And ofc the fact that free and premium is mixed.

I used to love tapas but now I prefer webtoons. But ofc Webtoons has it's cons too.
I'm new to webcomicsapp so I can't say much about it but so far that seems great.

Actually, Webtoons has this too. Room of Swords is a comic that takes heavy advantage of animated pages. Your other points, especially the mature content system, I personally agree with. I hate how Webtoons has entire comic marked, rather than individual chapters or sections.

room of swords is a featured webtoon! i believe gif support is only for featured creators, like its bg music option, since the only webtoons i've seen that have animated gifs are featured, and no discover webtoons i've read has used it yet (and i read a lot of discover webtoons). also when uploading only .jpg files are allowed, so there's that too.
