I've seen a lot of people mention Instagram is probably the best place to post side content to promote your comic. My question is, what do you post? What seems to be effective for you?

i don't post anything on instagram but what i've seen others do is they post fan-art of shows everyone's watching these days, WIPs of their comics, updates of when a new chapter is out, and memes of their stories

I pulled in a lot of new readers via IG and grew my account a lot as well.

There's generally two types of posts:

For attracting new readers:

  1. Narrative Panels:
    • Post panels that act as a mini-story, showing potential readers a snippet of what the comic is about.
      • One or two panels per carousel slide
    • The focus may depend on your genre & audience tastes
      • ex: character dynamics, their conflicts, their battles, etc.
      • ex: romance readers react well to panels showcasing heart-fluttering (or super scandalous) moments between characters.
  2. Trending sounds/memes
    • Leverage trending memes by adapting them with your characters or comic theme.
      • Reels is the best for this.
      • Trending reel sounds have an arrow symbol next to the sound name.
    • The reel should ideally be shareable (i.e., funny/relevant without comic context) to help them circulate to a wider audience.

For building loyalty of current readers:

  1. Update Day post:
    • Showcase interesting panels of your most recent episode, reminding people to read lol
  2. Trendy memes.
  3. Behind-the-scenes:
    • Share short videos or photos of your workspace, sketches, chapter WIPs, etc.
      * If sharing a screenshot of a WIP, try having your art program's UI show a little, for a casual look
      * Kinda like traditional artists taking a photo of their sketchbook with a pencil nearby
    • Extra character art and details that aren't in the comic (or are easily glossed over)

I use Canva Pro and do a bit of a tease for the recent page released. The ad also talks about what platforms to read censored and uncensored. More about it and anything else I want to add.
Then put the ad on FB, Instagram and Pillowfort (its like Tumblr).

I publish a preview of the upcoming page using one panel (I upload two pages a week) with a short and not too spoilery sentence about what's happening. Here I post an example

Then I made a carousel that resume what each chapter is about, turning them into reels too.
