What Do You Look For Horror?

I've always been a fan of slow burn horror. Like others have already said before me, I enjoy horror where something is a bit off but it takes a moment or two to realise it. I think good horror can also include dread - the idea that something or someone is there but you never actually see them.

Also pls don't give me people making stupid choices. How much scarier is a story when the protagonists make all the right choices and it doesn't make a damn difference because there's nothing they can do to escape?

I think you would love John Carpenter's The Thing. It's body horror combined with cosmic horror/sci-fi horror, and basically the best because of the buildup to each gore fest. Like, everyone there is a reasonable fellow, give or take, and the only reason things go south is because of paranoia rather than stupidity. Everyone is trying to figure out who among them in the thing. They think about blood tests, about eating in separate cans. And it's not until the entity starts sabotaging do things go south.

I will say this -- as cheesy as it could sometimes get, 70s/80s gore effects were pretty lit.

Yes!!! I forgot about 'Mama' I was so freaked out by that movie... and then they showed Mama and all sense of fear was gone for me. It completely ruined the movie

I prefer a psychological/mystery type of horror without blood

I'm actually ashamed of myself that I haven't seen this yet - thanks for the rec! And you don't have to sell old school gore effects to me! it's late era, but hellraiser's my favourite horror film, I'm here for it!

I say Psychological; to me, what makes horror "horror" is how the the very thing that is causing this mess is getting into people's heads. It's sometimes boring when the creature just goes and kills ya like a beast instead of just being there and causing you to panic. Horror games that can incorporate that kind of fear and pretty good, including horror movies.
