I think you would love John Carpenter's The Thing. It's body horror combined with cosmic horror/sci-fi horror, and basically the best because of the buildup to each gore fest. Like, everyone there is a reasonable fellow, give or take, and the only reason things go south is because of paranoia rather than stupidity. Everyone is trying to figure out who among them in the thing. They think about blood tests, about eating in separate cans. And it's not until the entity starts sabotaging do things go south.
I will say this -- as cheesy as it could sometimes get, 70s/80s gore effects were pretty lit.
