What do you think of fan service?

.Well, fan service is considered bad in most works, and I personally do not like and do not want to add it to my works, but what bothered me the most is that people think that I made Rotoni and her mother as fan service, although this is not true. Well, the criticism came from my Arab fans because their breasts were relatively large. Well, the matter is due to the fact that Rotoni’s mother is Italian, and it is known that the people of southern Europe have larger bodies than the rest of the Europeans. I am not saying that this is a rule, but naturally the girl will inherit this trait from her mother. In any case, genetics is not the only reason, because there will be horrible suffering that Rotoni will be exposed to because of what some see as an advantage and the like. In any case, I would like to see your opinion on the subject.

Fan service is another marketing tactic. Sometimes it's there for a reason, and sometimes no reason at all other than to give the excuse to draw an attractive man or woman.

In all my comics, I have had people find some of my characters "hot" and had comments like

"When will they kiss?"
"Its OK to be gay / lesbian when are they coming out?"
"More naked pls..."

Most number of fan boys and fan girls among my ocs... none other than Akala.

hmmmm, I think it may depend on the people. I don't particularly dislike it or like it for most part but I know people watch some shows because of those scene, so I guess it could be marketing technique. But I don't think your character looks like you drew it for fan service purpose, because although she's beautiful and has voluminous body, she's covered up and wearing modest outfit.

I think this is a matter of creative and expressive freedom.

Now on the internet, there's so much criticism about sexy characters that it makes me feel powerless.

If I want to draw a woman with large breasts, I won't look for some realistic reason like ethnicity or genetics. For me, it's simply because 'I want to draw it that way.'

Unfortunately, I focus too much on logical details in the story. The reason is that I work according to the principle of “everything has a reason,” and my desire as a writer is not a logical reason.

You need a way to grip the attention of your readers. As long as it follows Tapas' guidelines, it's game.

You shouldn't care about what a dozen people say, but your general audience. If they yearn for fan service, then you deliver it pronto.

I like fanservice, I also mainly draw it for myself. But so far, readers seem to like it too, going by the comments of my mobster comic.

You know what's not fair? That fanservice with female characters get far more criticism than male ones. I say equal opportunity for all!

In all seriousness though, it really depends on the setting and mood of your story, fanservice gets more leeway in comedic stories than serious and emotional ones.

@Humbug I completely agree with what you said. I once saw online where someone strongly criticized a female character for being too scantily dressed, saying the character shouldn't be so 'unrealistically' sexy.
Then that same person turned around and liked an adult BL manga with sexy male characters

I really can't understand why, if a work doesn't align with someone's values, they can't just choose not to watch it, instead of demanding that all creators in the world conform to their standards.

There's a time and place for it. It's fine in romcom moments, but not when the characters are distressed or in a serious situation. I don't think just giving a character large chest or cleavage is fan service unless it's inhumanly unrealistic. Framing and posing matters too.

I think it depends on what you call fan service. Technically, including anything that doesn’t serve any purpose other than being something your readers like, is fan service, which means memes, references etc. also fall into this category. And obviously I’m completely fine with that. It also works the other way around: a character with a large chest or any other features seen as sexually attractive is not necessarily fan service. I’m also completely fine with that. There’s no reason we should be completely deprived of sexy characters in media (and also to be honest, a lot of these features, like a large chest, aren’t inherently sexual, which I feel like people often forget about.)

What really bothers me though is when “fan service” appears in a context where characters (usually female) have no control over their body or “sexiness”, or where a character is reduced to this “fan service” aspect without having any other character traits. We see this a lot with Lucy in Fairy Tail or with Tamaki in Fire Force. That just feels kind of dehumanizing. In moments like these, I often ask myself which fans this kind of “fan service” is meant for.
Also, when fan service is used on underage characters. Ew.

It just didn’t make sense aesthetically or historically even.

Houdini died in 1926 I’m not sure if he ever got to see any cartoons like that.

I don't mind fan service. There are times where it can get ridiculous, but even then, I don't actually care. If something genuinely annoys me, I do the simple thing and not engage with the media anymore.
