Hm, besides folklore and my direct life experience, the fiction my work took the most direct inspiration from is Hilda and a mediocre anime called Wagaya no Oinari-sama.
Hilda gives us the vibe of a younger character who regularly interacts with strange spirits in a world where she doesn't have to explain their existence or hide them from her parents and all that nonsense. It also gave me the confidence to lean into the warm, cozy vibe and not worry so much about being dark or self-important.
Wagaya no Oinari-sama is a mid-2000s anime about an ancient celestial fox who becomes the guardian to some normal boys, regularly battling Japanese folklore spirits. I don't actually recommend this one, I recognize that I like it better than it deserves.
I also took inspiration from Ranma 1/2, C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy, Azumanga Daioh, and all the Ghibli and Cartoon Saloon films, among other things. It... might be an eclectic mix.
