Goodness the amount of evil fairy stories I wrote in my spare time XD Much more proud of those than the DBZ comics... They will never see the light of day. (cough-awkward sex scenes without knowing what sex was-cough).

For me I can remember, I was in second grade and one of my class mates dad was the loval artist for the dennis the menace comic. He came into class and gave us all a quick tutorial on how to draw Dennis in a basic pose with a hand wave. From that point on I began doodling and creating my own characters. It was only recently, maybe the last few years that I started trying my hand at writing and working with stories in my comics, otherwise they were just single panel visual gag type things. But yeah. 2nd grade sparked my interest lol.

In my case, i think i has to be manga, i read comics, but manga got the most impact of me, since a was a kid i loved anime and manga, if i need to be specific the 2 mangas who really really made me want to make comics and do something that amazing those would be Ruroni Kenshin, also know Samurai X, by Nobuhiro Watsuki in my childhood, and Zetman by Masakazu Katsura in my teenage, those aren't the best mangas i have read, but they got somehow the biggest impact, even today Kyoto Arc makes Ruroni Kenshin remain as my favorite manga.
if we talk about Comics,Spider man and Spawn are on my favorites, and Fables is amazing, if we talk about Cartoons Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes are in my bookshelf, and when you are surrounded by that all awesomeness you think to yourself "God, i want to something that entertaining"

I liked watching cartoons when I was little and wanted to make cartoons of my own. Except I didn't know how to make cartoons, so I made comics instead. :B

Archie comics was the start along with reprints of early Spiderman. My Older brother had a great collection of early Marvel with Fantastic Four, X-men, Tales to Astonish ect. so I got my love of Kirby , Ditko and Steranko from those. When I got older I got into JM Dematteis Justice League and independent stuff like Cerebus, TMNT, Flaming Carrot, Nexus. I could go on and on! I did some black and white comics with some buddies in the 90's. Shott Loose and Punk. Just now got back into it but I am having a blast doing something 100% myself.

During my childhood, I always wanted to tell stories. I tried writing novels and short stories, but I was having trouble conveying emotions and action sequences. After all, how can you "show not tell" if all you have is words? When I discovered comics, I found that a single expression on a single panel could convey more emotional depth than an entire paragraph, and comics have been my medium of choice ever since.

Ive always drawn and been a lover of all things art. But it was when I started working for a comic book publisher when I started really learning the ropes and a lot of great tips for comics.

I discovered that I wasn't just an artist, but a creator. I wanted to create stories, so I just stopped thinking about-and started doing it!

I guess I started like everyone, as a big comics/cartoon fan, I started as soon as I could read, taking some Tintin & Asterix at my grandparents' (I'm in France so here we have so much awesomeness in comics). And I went on, drawing my own funny stuff. It became more awesome when I had internet and more recently when I discovered tapastic to share with the world !

Love this topic ! For me it was the fact that I was in the UK as a French expatriate, and I wanted to tell my stories to my relatives in a funny, appealing way. Comics were an obvious answer because I basically learnt to read with them. Like @sow_ay, said,France is full of crazy wonderful awesome comics, so it's really easy to get inspired by all of it.

Boredom....
I was going to put a deep, meaningful story that pulled the heartstrings and leave people in tears.
But I just do it cause I'm bored...

Ok, actually it was Calvin and Hobbes.
Before that I had considered comics (I'm sorry in advance) a useless waste of time (I was eight, ok?). I just didn't take much interest in them. And I wasn't that interested when I got the Essential Calvin and Hobbes from the library either. But the second I read the first page I was hooked. Its now been 8 years and I've memorized them all word for word (I'm not kidding, I really know them all.)
I started making comics for the internet when I found a site called Failblog(side note I've found several comics from here . They were done in paint and didn't look to good, but I liked them.
It also got me interested in art in general. I practiced with different courses and soon was better than everyone I knew (almost everyone, my bother Micah was better by a long shot).
Micah was also the reason I found Tapastic. He had AtokNiiros Facebook page up for a few seconds and after me yelling , "GO BACK GO BACK!!!" I got a better look, I looked up treehouse an baddabing baddaboom! I'm here.
And then I made life of a homeschooler and...

There were many factors that pushed me to begin creating comics, but the biggest reasons were that comics provided me a chance to combine writing and visual art. I majored in English and like to write and read stories/poetry but I've also been very invested in art as a hobby, watching and studying everything from anime to classical painters. One day, it just hit me that comics combined the best of both worlds. Also, I like how variegated the medium is. You can do pretty much anything you want with your comics. You can tell a serious and philosophical story or a funny and simple one, have stick figures or beautiful fleshed out figures. I feel like a lot of people tend to look down on comics as something that's exclusively for children or as shallow without anything full-fledged adults could learn from, but I think that comics require an extraordinary amount of talent (you have to draw AND write well and it's hard enough doing just one!) and I know that I've learned some incredibly deep things from them. Overall, the perpetual challenges and amount of talent required to make comics really appeal to me because I'm the type who likes to study and explore as many things as possible. I hope I get good enough to the point I can inspire others like some comics have inspired me
