Okay, i know that this thing is PURELY SUBJECTIVE but...What is the thing that can seriously down your ability to like character design-wise? I have three:
1) Pink-haired main heroine. Gods, just why?! Why out of so many colours you had to pick this one?

2) Clothes that makes no sense, for example: standard superhero clothes. Why most of superhumans need wear underpants above these..this.. what this thing even is... pantihose? I asked many times but nobody ever can explain.

3) When people make yin-yang based characters but mix up colours. I.e. black is male and white is a female (actually it's the other way round).

-hair that looks like Sasuke's (I don't know why I feel irked whenever I see it.
-agreed. Spandex superhero clothes
-frilly clothing on the girl-who-loves-the-hero-but-gets-captured stock character (haven't seen it yet on tapastic but I've seen it elsewhere)

  • Spiky, pointing to the side you mean?
  • why not to draw them naked? it would make more sense at that, given all these suspicious details people put in there. Or to give them some normal clothes.
  • oh yes, also bonus points if she has pink hair and bunny motif.

I guess I hate "overcompensation" designs.
i.e.
Main character hair
Over complicated designs with parts for no reason except to look "kewl"
Also the "underwear" thing for superheroes never really bothered me because it's actually fairly rare in the genre (only Superman and Batman ever had them as I recall), but I do hate when a superhero costume is so generic that it doesn't convey visually what they are/what powers they have (Spider-Gwen's costume is an offender of this)

Otherwise, designs don't bother as much as actual character

Oooh boy, you are going to hate my comic then, as I have a mixture of 1 and 2 on your list (although most of my superheroes aren't traditionally wearing spandex [I think I've only got one character like that, and he's meant to parody a generic superman-type hero], so if it's only about spandex, then I'm not really counted as #2). Well, it's a subjective opinion, so whatever. All of my character designs stay far away from the realm of realism and are pretty flashy, so I'm obviously going to have split opinions on it. Why pink? Because I felt that my heroine looked right with pink hair. I know it's not a realistic choice, but I think it contrasts well with her black and white outfit (which coincidentally, has kind of a yin-yangish setup with her shirt! If you don't like the yin yang theme, then BAM! I Nailed all three)!

It's hard for me to think of character designs that I don't like...but I'm not really a fan of hot headed characters having to wear red, and cool headed characters having to wear blue. Or just characters that each represent a plain jane element and wearing the predictable coloured attire alongside it. Also, main characters that look as generic and ordinary as hell don't grab me. I'd prefer for them to have at least something that makes them stand out.

When it's Victorian England but everyone has emo hair! Argh!

I am with you. I love overly complex, unbelievable clothing designs on characters purely because it steps so far away from what you'd expect of people in this world -- it's a lot of fun! More lively, more crazy. AND I ALSO have a story with a pink-haired girl as one of the main characters! It's a point of ridicule for her in her world, too, so... it might be entertaining for anyone who dislikes that trope, hahah^^

Personally, I want to say I hate eye patches but I've actually warmed up to a few characters with them. It's so commonly used but hey, I've seen it can be done without being too kitschy.

I wouldn't say I have real pet peeves when it comes to character design, but I will say I have a hard time relating to the main characters in a lot of gag/slice of life comics when they're drawn as really simplistic. The ones that look like the author are fine, but when it's like just a white blobby person with a smiley face I tune out.

I hate seeing cat girls that have cat ears on the top of their heads but also have human ears!
It's like WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! The poor thing is already a freak of nature!

It's not about being realistic or not - I mean go to my Lightfall or my Worldbuilding "sketchbook"and have a look at my characters. Realism? Nah, realism isn't my strong side either. It's about overuse of a certain colour. Speaking of yin-yang - I only don't like when people confuse yin with yang and that's all.

But yes, in general - I saw your comic and I will be honest - it's not my cup of tea, though, I don't hate it either.

Characters with heterochromia. Especially if the two different eye colours are wacky like one pink eye and one yellow eye or something :u I know people CAN actually have heterochromia, but when I see it in character design it's usually on cliche anime characters in a cheap way to make them unique.

Also rainbow anything. Rainbow hair, rainbow clothes, rainbow fur... plz no rainbow characters ;_; especially not with neon and angel/devil wings tacked on for extra-special-snowflakeness.

Basically, any character where their most unique attribute is their zany design and not their actual personality/character.

@CelestialNavigator

No worries, not every comic can fit everyone's tastes, so it's understandable. I just looked into your stuff too, and it's not really my cup of tea either (although I will say on some of your environmental pictures, your colouring is flat-out stunning).

But yes, if we see the same things and patterns too much (such as my hot headed/cool headed character reference), we do tend to want to avoid them. I've personally never been bothered by a single hair colour choice though. I find that pretty much every colour in the spectrum has been used on characters in all of the media I consume, so I'm kind of desensitized to it.

@Michelle - Haha, I know I'm really putting myself out there by putting my characters with a bullseye on them for other posters here, but I have a gruff, grumbly military sergeant character with rainbow hair and rainbow powers. Painbow is his name. Although to be fair, as I've stated in that thread about why we design our characters the way we do, I originally came up with ridiculous character designs and concepts, and over time, I started to expand on them with personalities and character development that I can really get behind.

Haha, I had a "cat boy" character in an old comic, and I made a short joke comic about what was under his hair (did he have human ears AND cat ears, or was it just nothing where the human ears whould sit?). I think it ended up with the cat boy lifting up his hair for another character to see, and what they saw, they couldn't unsee...;)

@Greg_Dickson I'm sorry! XD Tbh nothing I mention is a 100% deal-breaker to me, I just notice these character design attritbutes are really popular with special-snowflake deviantart OC types.

BUT if you design an insane rainbow-themed character to fit into an equally insane world and all the characters are fleshed out and actually interesting, that's another thing. I like over-the-top stuff, when it's intentional and not just a desperate attempt to be xXedgyXx or ~UnIQuE~.

I mean, I can get through the whole thing if character is very good written but most likely I will be irked a lot. I can take manga better simply because it's black-and-white 99% of time.

@Michelle - Oh, it's okay. I'm actually having fun kind of laughing at myself for coincidentally creating these characters with tropes/designs that people aren't fans of. There's really a wide range of people here on Tapastic, so I'm not surprised. I'm glad to see it's not a deal-breaker though. I created my character, having him contrast with his gruff self. Of all of the powers for this poor, grumbly, battle-hardened old man to get, he had to get stuck with the bright, flashy rainbow powers. How will he deal with them? That's the fun or writing such a scenario. To expand on it, and to see where it can go! I like a challenge!

@CelestialNavigator - That's funny, because my comic was going to be in black and white, but I decided to go for colours about a week ago. Funny how coincidental this has all ended up.

Given the description, I can assume you've spend quite some time on DeviantArt, correct?
Bad writing sure is the biggest offender. I think everyone here will agree.

@CelestialNavigator Y-yeah... D: I've had an account there since 2003 so I have bore witness to many a terrible OC. Though I've seen these kind of designs all over the place really.

It really bothers me when characters have super bright and clashing color palettes, stuff like neon green against bright red. It just makes my eyes hurt. >.<

@Savannah
Lol, same. Four ears always seemed really creepy to me. Personally, it kinda bugs me when the ears are on the direct top too, rather than the sides. Human ears come out of the side of the head, animal ears seem like the should come from the side too.

@Michelle - DA just has the biggest concentration of those. On the pair with Furrafinity, I think.

@nessiefynn - I was guilty of this until recently.

I think it's because people tend to be confused about from where animal ears grow in general.
But speaking of creepiness of the whole thing: it's uncanny valley at it's finest.

Yeah our skulls aren't designed to have ears on the top our heads >m< even cat ears are on the side of their heads rather than the top it's just hard to tell because their skull shape is different from ours.

One thing that can really piss me off is BOOBS THAT MAKE NO SENSE! Either too big or too high up on the chest or too perky, like wtf, real boobs are awesome and they don't look like that. Also, a winning combination, huge boobs, small waist. Like, if a woman had a waist like that with tremendous boobs she would snap like a twig! CRACK! Just like that! Sorry, I'm really passionate about boobs, haha

It isn't so much 1 thing that bugs me... more like too much of a bunch of things that bugs me.

like

Main character = Pink haired girl in school uniform.

Okay... nothing particularly interesting about her and a very overused design schematic in anime but I'll give it a chance to see if she's a good character and I like her personality.

Main character = Pink haired girl, duel wielding death scythes, and hand guns, with pigtails, and an eye patch, and wings, two coloured eyes (it's why she wears the eye patch so you can't tell her eyes are two colours) school uniform that looks different from ALL the other characters school uniforms, lolita.

Yeah... that is too much... I'm gonna have a LOT of trouble trying to warm up to that character (and that's only if I end up giving them a chance)

@CelestialNavigator mmmh, no, she doesn't bother because her design makes sense since it's all about extremes, she's cool, I am talking more about like the girls from High School of the Dead... I HATE THAT!

@mrjonzap But...

I think I dislike it when its a glaringly obvious redo of any other popular animated character. I don't mind it as much if inspiration is drawn from real life and movies probably because I do that sometimes. I think its also because you can't copy a real life person completely unless your style is super realistic.

@joannekwan I think Buso Renkin (due to its place in my childhood) was the last place the V-bang was acceptable.

The facepalm is strong with this one. Everytime I see this trope, even if its meant to be taken seriously I always imagine the characters are Chuunibiyo.

1

Scantily clad warriors without a really good reason as to why they are scantily clad. Aztec warriors may be naked waist up, but knights should be in full armor regardless of gender. Wizards should probably at least have their arms and vital organs covered, and super heroes do not need to be wearing form fitting spandex that only covers their genitals and navel. If a character design has a sleeveless top, have a reason. If a character is wearing a mythril bikini, they better also be wearing something to protect their internal organs or be in a context in which such an outfit makes sense.

To be a bit narcissistic and point to my own character designs for a moment, I tend to dress my characters from neck to ankle in clothes that make sense given their context. In The Bio War, the British super soldiers are wearing British WWII officer uniforms because they are British officers on a recon and damage control mission in Liege, Belgium. The Nazi is wearing an SS uniform and the civilians are wearing casual working class jackets, button-up shirts, and work pants. By the current page, one of the Brits has torn apart the sleeves of her uniform by using one of her abilities, so in the future she will receive a modified combat uniform that has no sleeves, as will the two soldiers with the ability to unhinge many of the bones in their body at will. The character who is about to go super sayan will likely need a drastically modified uniform in the future, but I haven't designed it yet. What I have NOT done is randomly put these characters in spandex and latex uniforms that show off bits of their anatomy that would only be tactically advantageous if the enemy was an army of perverts who were incapacitated by their own dirty thoughts. Also, spandex and latex did not exist in 1941 in the state that they do now, so this would make even less sense.

It's funny, as I wonder if my view/sub count would have increased had I changed my heroine's hair colour to blonde, brown, or even blue instead of pink. I seriously have not been watching much anime in the past 10 years (or browsing deviantart. I've never had any interest in that site), so maybe there's been an influx of pink-haired heroines? Out of all of the anime I've seen in the past, I only remember less than a handful of them having pink hair (although my memory is quite shoddy. Maybe I never noticed). I really feel like I've been living under a rock, and have completely and unintentionally shot myself in the foot here with my design. It's almost to the point where it's kind of embarrassing. Well, too late for me now. I may as well just soldier on and do the best I can.
