What is your favorite non-romantic dynamic between characters in your comic?

The main relationship in my story Magic Advisor is the bantering and fights between my hero Lizzy and my very silly, overdramatic self-proclaimed "super villain" Prim.

In the beginning Lizzy calls the cops on Prim and Prim escapeds ready for revenge.
Now Lizzy has sort of given up on calling the cops and sees Prim as an unavoidable annoyances of everyday life.... ^^

The relationship I most enjoy writing in Zounds, Alack, and By My Troth is Portia and Nerissa, who are the classic servant that is cleverer than their master. Portia is constantly upbeat, naively believing that everything will work out, while Nerissa is always left to pick up the pieces. There's a long-suffering quality to Nerissa, and she's often quite blunt in cutting through Portia's silliness - but nevertheless there's a genuine fondness underneath, and she can't help but get swept up in her mistress's enthusiasm.

Well, I like my two main characters, Miss and Crow, from my comic Crow's Worth. They are two people who love (non-romantically) and hate each other.

There is a bit of a family-like connection between the characters. Miss can sometimes be a very nurturing person and Crow lacks a parental figure in his life. However, they are not close enough for Miss to come off as Crow's mother...more like an aunt.

But then on the other hand, it's an ESTJ competing with an ENFP. So they do sort of clash with each other yet on the other hand they sort of emotionally need each other.

My comic-in-planning has a central triad of a lawful good idealistic warrior, a chaotic evil necromancer with a horrible past, and a true neutral strategist/historian/scientist who knows about but is detached from most events in the universe. At the start of the comic, they all know each other from the past-- the warrior and strategist were once part of an adventuring party that confronted the necromancer (in the warrior's case, twice), the warrior and necromancer are long-standing mortal enemies (though the necromancer had believed her to be long since defeated), and the strategist worked for the necromancer in the early days of the necromancer's empire. The warrior and necromancer are utterly opposed on all fronts, the warrior and strategist are old friends (mostly because the warrior decided they were friends and the strategist thought, hey, she's strong, sounds good), and the necromancer and strategist have a tense diplomatic relationship in which both try to manipulate the other into serving their interests. They're a lot of fun to write because the possibilities for conflict are endless, and because their personalities are different on the surface but have some unexpected similarities.

I always enjoy writing non-romantic dynamics and close friendships- and there are a lot that are going to get more focus in my series, Oni x Fox!

One set of such characters are Shintaro and Saya are childhood friends who couldn't be more different. Shin is an eccentric and cautious ninja with a love for all things paranormal, and Saya is almost always in a perpetual bad mood- she shares none of Shin's interests. It's an odd friendship, but they both understand each other at heart, and no matter the teasing or annoyance they bring each other, their friendship is built to last!

As for my own favorite… in my practice comic about smugglers, I've got two cousins, Matt and Stan. Matt's a pretty typical dudebro (the poor thing), Stan's a very effeminate and eccentric rich kid.

Neither of them can stand the other, but they both pretend to the other's face that they're BFFs. As the story progresses, they come to realize that they both actually think the other is satan, and then end up moving past that and becoming best friends for real. I love em 'cause they have all the same core personality traits, but they portray themselves totally differently. So they can punch each other's buttons very effectively, but also "get" each other really well when it matters.

Right now in my comic, Curiosities and Tragedies, the relationship with the two characters is complicated. The romance is over, but there is a closeness thats hard for them to separate from. I think they more or less have to be friends because its that or nothing.

The non-romantic relationship I currently have is between Cian (Avengin' Arrow) and Jen (Damoizelle). They're both at their physical peek, and it's not that they don't notice each other, but Cain is way too young and immature for her. They're developing strong bonds as they adventure together, though.

But I often laugh in my head as I think of the two male characters, how technically they don't like each other, but one is giving the other "pick up the chick" pointers and in that way they start to overcome their differences.

And the interaction between the sisters are quite cute too where the younger is outspoken and the elder is patient, and they both are honest.

My entire comic is centered on two women who were best friends growing up. Minna was kidnapped by confederados after the Civil War, and Hettie raced after to rescue her. But in the end, Minna rescued Hettie. Now the two work together trying to get revenge on their captors who have moved to the "Wild West".
The two have known one another since childhood, so there's a lot of familiarity. Minna tends to be a little more level-headed, although she has her flare-ups, and Hettie tends to be very emotion-driven. The two have a relationship that's sort of like "I NEED HELP. Never mind, I did something stupid anyways." "Gah, fine. I'll fix it." Then they switch spots and do it all over again.

And at the same time, they are very kick-ass.

Well for now, Jun and Iman's relationship can be summed up like this:

Later we get to meet !@#$%^& and he and Jun will escalate the hilarity in every room and become the Bokes to Iman's Tsukkomi. But its going to make*&^%$# irritable and she's going to take a while before she warms up to the others. And then one of my favorites is going to be &^%$#@, who is basically going to be their mom. He won't speak much which will make his panels interesting to write. Ugh. I need more hands.

I needed this thread and didn't even know it! Don't get me wrong, I love me a good romance, but not at the expense of great platonic/nonromantic relationships! So happy to see this thread full of familial bonds and close friendships (and now you've all added so many more comics to my reading list--thanks!).

So I'm pretty big on sibling dynamics, as someone with three siblings herself, and as someone who is both a younger sister and an older sister, so it's no surprise one of my favourite dynamics in my comic is between these two brothers, Seth and Jon:

Half-brothers on their father's side, but for as long as they've been able to say the words, they've always seen each other as just brothers. Their dynamic has become way more complex than the smart brother/dumb brother dynamic it initially started as. Now they're each other's support, each other's foil, and sometimes each other's antagonist, because siblings.

I also really like the dynamic between best friends Seth and Anna:

I really wanted to depict a straight man and a straight woman who were just friends, acknowledged that the other was attractive (okay, this one's a little more one-sided coughSeththinksAnnaishotcough), but never had any sexual or romantic interest in each other. All too often characters like these wind up falling in love, and that's fine for some, but just not what I'm going for.

I think Miki and Gerald from Re:Set counts as one. Miki is a strong person, and so is Gerald, they have respect for each other for being so straightforward with their goals. It started off shaky as they are against each other at first, but then they get better understanding of each other.

OOOO so My favorite non romantic dynamic rn with my comics is My character Mack and his best friend Cia from my comic Letters Across The Hall-BL Like they can be super catty to each other but in the end are always there when it really counts.

My favorite non-romantic dynamic in Glitch is between my characters Jett and Kaya. Jett lives with Kaya after losing his parents at a young age. Her dad, who was a close friend of his parent's. adopts him. They live together and are really close. I think some people think that Jett has a crush on Kaya but I wrote them to be completely platonic and just best friends. I didn't want my comic to go the route of the childhood friend hooking up with the main character. Some pages featuring them (not in any particular order):

I have an interesting twist on this, and while they might have a bit of a moment, it's nothing near romantic.

I have two parallels meeting, one from a completely different time. They're basically the same person and have to work together, but because they come from different times, they have a different point of view on certain situations and often clash, but they both hold such a (secretive) high respect for one another that they often make a good team where it counts. It's still a work in progress.~

I try to figure out what the limit is of family love in my comic, when will a character cross the line and can my main character ever forgive his sister?I have a massive interest in psychology so there's lots of arguing, fighting, crying, traumas and doubt. It's enjoyable to write since there's a constant sense of danger and awkardness at the same time. That's how I experience it anyway. When I'm bored I think of all sorts of scenarios I won't be able to include in the story, but it's just that much fun to think about how everyone would react!

Ok, so one of my all time favorite non-romantic relationships is the one between Shiro and Alex (not yet introduced) in Facade. The story is based on Zygomynoxia, a space station built many years in the future as a "perfect paradise" but of course, things go wrong. To the point of slavery becoming common ground again, especially to those born with powers. Shiro is born into slavery. Alex is a proud soldier. However, after they get to know one another, they become a Mother and son type relationship and I love it so much. Shiro looks up to her and Alex is a fierce protector. I love it. Like, a lot.

Luke and Lana , because Lana treats Luke like how she treats her brothers and sister and Luke sees Lana as an older sister also at he jokingly calls her mom and she knew his problems when his mother disappeared and she raised Luke when they were kids as a babysitter until she moved to boarding school but she still visited him during summer later on she took Luke under her wing again when he ran away , she enrolled him to school and also shopping with him for his clothes and she bought a book about parenting until she gave the book to her boss when Luke turned 20
