Possibly, on the intense or the 'dark' side. Him standing in the middle of the road, could mean, that he is tired of life? Or maybe something happened to him or his loved ones causing him to be unstable?
And nothing mattered to him--meaning- something that mattered to him dearly was taken away from him or maybe left him?
