What makes a good anthology?

I think an anthology webcomic would be cool, but I think I'd need more info on anthology series in general.

The only anthology series I am aware are The Twilight Zone, Amazing Stories, American Horror Stories, and Black Mirror. I've never watched any of these except maybe a few Twilight Zone ones, but the only thing I see that they have is common is that they all have themes. Science Fiction, horror, that kind of thing.

I wonder if an anthology webcomic could ever get popular. One of the reasons people will follow a series is because they want to see how a story progresses, but what if the story was different every time?

What do you guys think? What do you think makes a good anthology series? Do you think an anthology series could get a good following?

If I like a creator enough, I'm more than jazzed to sub to their anthology work. I think so long as the anthology has a general theme or style, I'll be into it.

For comics, I was quite fond of Emily Carroll's Through the Woods, a collection of a few horror comics.

And a lot of Junji Ito's works are collected in anthology volumes.

Our group is doing an anthology on TAPAS right now.

We don't however accept the idea that anthologies have to be "themed" to be collected. It's such a strangely artificial thing to do from a creative standpoint. People don't consume other media that way...nobody turns on the TV and limits themselves to only watching medical dramas on Tuesdays.

...already have huge followings...so it's not a question of IF anthologies could get a good following as much as when more people will start producing them.
