This week I decided to watch the previous Spider-Man films with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, basically one a day until the day I go see No Way Home in theaters. I did Andrew's unfinished trilogy of Amazing Spider-man first, bc I only watched the first one once and the second one I don't think I even finished. Figured I should give them a go first.
Overall, I really enjoyed both films! I have minor gripes about the plot, but nothing that ultimately sours the experience for me personally. I've heard the second one wasn't well-received so I was expecting the worst, but it was a pleasant surprise. I could see myself going back to them more in the future I have a lot of thoughts on characters, but it'll delve into spoilers so I'll just tidy up and hide em
Spoilery thoughts about characters.
I agree with the idea that Andrew's a better Spidey than Peter. Very loudmouthed and comedic, in comparison to Tobey's. But his Peter side doesn't feel like an awkward nerd in the slightest, that's kinda where the contrast is for the kid in high school vs. his secret identity as a superhero. I'm not that big a fan on the whole DNA stuff.. it kiiiinda does away the idea that anyone could become like Spider-Man if he's a byproduct of his father's experiments. Anyways! I like this Spidey!
Gwen is actually lovable and not just a damsel in distress. She actually helps in contributing to the downfall of the villains! Without her, that lizard transformation gas or whatever would've gone off in New York and Peter's webshooters wouldn't be able to handle massive amounts of electricity! Sad to see her go.. The relationship is wholesome and their chemistry is good, we love it. The drama's understandable and believable too.
The villains are a little iffy in development, but their action scenes are cool. Uhhh, let's get into them! The Lizard is cool as an enemy, but you almost never feel bad for him. Weirdly enough, as soon as Dr. Connors turned, his humanity kinda left until the end when he's beaten. Probably the least thought-out choice of the first film.
Green Goblin's kinda rushed and tacked on to the second film tbh. I like the development with Harry but having him show up as an extra villain at the end felt unnecessary. Would've been better to save the full turn into Green Goblin for the next film.
Like most people, I thought Electro was fantastic! He's a pushover nerd suddenly given powers that can be used for evil- it's a trope, but it works! There's a genuine tragic nature to his character and Harry took advantage of that. He could've been an legitimate hero if people could just genuinely hear him out..
Idk how to end this, bye
