I think the most insulting thing said to my face was at my diploma jury, when I was asked by one of the jury how long my comic would take to draw. After estimating something between 4 and 5 years, she just looked at me with so much surprise and said 'Wow haha that's a LONG time, do you think you will be able to keep it up ?'
… Yeah. I just did 2 full color pages a week for an entire school year, I did three time the amount of pages asked for the diploma, I spent 4 years bleeding myself dry in this school to become a professional, being at the top of my class and respecting deadlines religiously, you're here to decide wether or not I get this diploma that state I'm able to work seriously and finish long projects. I think I'll manage lady, without your condescending questions.
Also got a guy look at my characters designs for my comic and say 'wow, this looks like it belongs in a women's magazine' which still ?? I have no answer to that ? Is it a critique ? Do I need to draw in a more '''manly''' style to do comics ?? Is it because I just wrote a few notes on the side in pink pen ?? My comic stuff is not soft pastel flowery stuff like what I sometimes do on the side so I guess it really boils down to the way I draw but ??? Are you telling me to drop comics and go into women's editorial illustrations ??? what does it MEANS man
my father also told me a good one when I told him I had made money off my art ( doing commissions ), which he proceed to say 'Really ?? That's awesome wow !' and immediately after 'but wouldn't you want to do an apprenticeship to get more money ?'. For the record, we had this conversation dozens of time. It's getting old.
