What role could a mail carrier play in a fantasy adventure?

This is actually about a game, not a novel. ^^; I have this NPC that I love a lot, who was originally meant to handle excess inventory...but that's not really a thing in the engine I'm using to actually make the game, and I feel like it'd be way more trouble than it's worth to try to program that in just so she can have a role.

So I'm thinking of repurposing her somehow...I want her to be seen on a regular basis, but not necessarily connected to the story.

The only idea I've had so far is making her like the Prodigious Postman in Miitopia, randomly delivering cute letters and goodies from old NPCs you haven't seen in a while. :9 Could work, but I think I can do better.

Maybe she has some ties with a semi-important character, or very distant ties to an important character, but it’s comically glossed over.

Depends what sort of world the characters are evolving in, and the sort of plot you have at hand. We might not suggest the same things whether it's a "romance" kind of plot, or a mystery one, or a horror one, etc.

Some ideas on the top of my head:
1. Deliver secret messages to important people - may be targetted by enemies and opponents because it's easier to torture the messenger than torture the recipients of said messages.
2. Prankster who fucks people's mail on purpose to set them up (could be both "benevolent" and "malevolent": she may mix letters in order to have two people meet and become close ones, or she could fuck their mail to force bad things to happen to them lol)
3. Secret reader of others' mail, she thus knows everyone's secrets.
4. Delivery girl disappeared! The mail is not delivered yet! What happened?

Just imagine Tom is a basic, everyday mail carrier but somehow he on his daily routine he gets sucked into some random fantasy adventure and has to save the day.

It could be commentary on how some people want to live a normal life, with a normal job but are constantly being sucked into this lifestyle that is seen as extraordinary

If your game uses many signboards or locations like any of the pokemon games, you can have the mail carrier inform the players about any instructions or locations. The character would be recurrent without affecting the flow of the story.

You could have them ride around in an old style vehicle. Maybe they could be a taxi to neighboring towns.

In Earthbound and Animal Crossing, you can order items that get delivered to you later on in the game.

Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley use the mailing system to sell items.

Or have a Paperboy minigame.

Don't forget to take into account how jobs change depending on the setting. A mail carrier, especially solo, in a world full of monsters and bandits on every road? They might end up still being a badass even if they're not interested in the larger scope of the plot.

I remember a video about fantasy worldbuilding where farmers would be the most respected professions, leaving the safety of the walls every day to make sure everyone gets fed. That kind of stuff really makes a world stand out!
