This is a tricky question since I usually keep ideas I never see before on my own; but if I have to give an answer it'd probably be comics with an exaggerated hip-hop/street/anime/sci-fi/seedy artstyle:

I'd like to see more mature fantasy stories that aren't completely dominated by the romance subplot (or have romance as the main plot) :')

One of the reasons I began creating my comic was that I couldn't find exactly what I wanted and figured I'd attempt to make something like it for myself, with the understanding that I'm limited by own (in)experience, skill, and dearth of free time.

"Exactly what I wanted" being a slower-paced, character-driven fantasy story with a balance of darker, mature themes and light-hearted fun, as well as a bit of adventure, action, drama, intrigue, mystery, horror, and romance elements thrown into the mix. My ideal story would feature moral heroes with relatable struggles, fears, and motivations and compelling relationship dynamics. It'd be set in an interesting world and have a good, colorful, semi-realistic art style. Something like a mix of Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy and Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive in a beautifully illustrated comic format, with some Studio Ghibli "finding magic in the everyday" vibes.

I have a few favorite fantasy webtoons that serve as inspirations (namely: Sable Curse, Woven, 23:4, Oasis, Ghostblade, and Mage Again) but I haven't come across too many stories on Tapas or Webtoon that approach fantasy from that angle and do it in a way I enjoy. Always felt there's a much bigger audience for genres like romance and comedy.

I like reading/watching stories that are about little kids being independent especially after being abandoned/lost someone. Which is probably why I love Angels of Death a lot, people don't like the idea because they think kids are incapable of surviving on their own in life but there's so many cool real life stories about orphans who lived their whole life depending on themselves. There's not much stories about those kinds of people.

One I can think that's about an orphan who's independent is The Queens Gambit, it's a really cool Netflix show that I lost interest as soon as they introduced her incapability to win in a competitive chess game because she needs her meds. I do believe this story is inspired by a real life chess competitive player, but did they have to make her look stupid and dependent on medication?

Anyway, I don't read novels but comics would be nice.

@AlydaB I agree. I just want the plot to move along lmao. I know in my story I'm using romance as a basis, but there's a bit of me that's like "COME ONNNNNNNNN! I JUST WANT TO GET TO THE REAL STORY ALREADY" despite me being the writer lol.

@Chuksi Also IT IS THE COOLEST LMAO. Like this LA/Japanese artstyle. If I were to ever to learn how to draw, this would be the aesthetic. Like I'm fine with the manga artstyle currently dominating the site, but I think things would be better if we all just unanimously agree that THIS is the way to go.

Maybe there are interesting stories hidden in the background of Tapas or Webtoon or wherever, but the problem is that there are so many comics and novels that it seems that they are all pigeonholed with the same theme, the truth is that I have found things that may not they are liked by the majority because they are unconventional, but they are interesting.

I'm currently reading a book that is challenging, because it deals with philosophical issues, so it may exist, but it is not so easy to find.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I want to see more comedic stories that are very witty and are not afraid to push the boundaries. Something akin to Seinfeld or Fraiser.

Hmmmm. I want a few things that really vary.

1.) Werewolves, skinwalkers, dragons, any time of shiftshaper. I really want some werewolf stories; I thoroughly enjoyed them.

2.) Looking for some stories with asexual characters. I don't see a ton of representation with the ace community that is maintaining a fantasy vibe.

I'm sure I've gone on about this a while ago in another thread; slice-of-life fantasy.

I want an imaginative, awe-inspiring fantasy world and enough breathing room in the story to really soak it in. You often hear people say worldbuilding is getting in the way of the plot, but darn it, I say the plot is getting in the way of the worldbuilding! I just want all lore, all the time (but in an accessible, non-crammy way :P)

I want a comic that captures that experience of having finished the main quest in an RPG (I'm thinking Elder Scrolls), and now you're just going around doing sidequests and guild questlines.

My favorite stories have always been: A detective for the police solves murders. It gets a plus if the detective gets in a dangerous situation trying to solve it.

Ahh I agree, I want to read more of that! As much as I enjoy convoluted good vs evil epics, slice-of-life can be a breath of fresh air, very relaxing and fun. At its best, it allows you to immerse yourself in the world and everyday lives of the cast, and if it's a beautiful, interesting world to explore, I could never get bored of it.

What you describe reminds me just a little bit of Pasta Gremlin's comic Fool's Party on Webtoon (the original, discontinued version in addition to the reboot). It's less awe-inspiring than comedic, and definitely not lore-heavy, but it's a slice-of-life fantasy about a bunch of fun characters wandering around doing side quests, and some aspects of it give me similar vibes to bitwam. It's the kind of world I could happily live in. :]

i would struggle with drawing it but, i would love to read more sports stuff!

there's a TON of weird stories you can explore with stuff like pro-wrestling, motorsports, etc- i would love to see more indie comics do stuff with that genre of story! (but as much as i love racing stuff, i understand why people wouldn't want to draw it for free because i would also noooot want to draw vehicles for free )

my absolute favorite genre to read is episodic mysteries tho, so i'm completely in agreement with AmandaJ-art on this one, too xD

@AlydaB I mean they do say 'write what you want to read'.

I suppose by that logic I want to read grounded human stories with a preference for sprinkling in science fiction and cosmic horror vibes. My favorite movies, books, games etc. are the ones that focus on the experiences of the characters over the genre elements. I've found I've grown tired of symbolism, analogy, and genre-isms and prefer the stories that can simply exist as a metaphor or feeling.
For instance I love the book Roadside Picnic, the main character is by no means heroic in any way, but he is just so human - a feeling I rarely get from contemporary writing nowadays. Moreso to the point, reading the book you get the feeling that both nothing has happened, but everything has changed and putting it down filled me with such a melancholic sadness that I've never been able to shake or replicate for more than a decade now. I guess I'm still chasing that dragon.

Which is a fantasy adventure romance story (primarily) for straight men. I feel like the webcomics world has the LGBT and woman romance area covered. (or dominated?) I know I can just read normal romance. But those are often just how handsome the guy is and how swept away the girl is or whatever. no thanks.
Its also gotta be heavy on the plot. And will have other characters for other people, so its not strictly JUST for straight men. But It is very male gazey. and probably not a real romance by traditional standards...

So that's what I want to read. A FUN, yet serious fantasy story with a complex plot which is couched in a pseudo romance.(but isn't an actual romance like the ones you find on tapas...)
