I am currently doing a few rewrites and fine tuning on my very first story - Black Fang. I hope I will have it done till end of the year. Balancing family, work and writing is sometimes tough. And finding some leftover energy after a hard day even tougher.

Marketing and promotion can be a pain in the ass, so good luck with that. A good rule of thumb I try to follow is to give something back to the audience I'm promoting to, give them a reason to give their time to my stuff. I mainly use humour or interesting stories for that.

Right now, I'm working the 20th chapter of my comic. Technically, I'm working on four comics at the same time, but that's a story for another day. Lmao Just the other day I was writing down a 10-page notes on a later arc I wanted to write. Sigh. Still working on it.

4 comics at the same time?
Are they all in the same genre or universe at least?

Eeeeee, well, I don't like writing the same story for too long, so I created this system where I jump between writing each story when I'm bored or stuck on an arc. Sometimes when I have a new story idea, I'll dump it into one of the stories and make it an arc instead of its own stand-alone story. I could write an anthology instead but as a reader I don't like anthology, so I opt to just writing it into already existing stories that I'm working on.

And if you're wondering, I'm not illustrating four comics at the same time. It's more scripts or excerpts. Sometimes I illustrate a scene or making a character design. Other than that, I try to keep my comic making focus on my current comic.

I got you and can relate to that, I have ideas all the time, also while illustrating my comic.
I have to be careful not to put too much stuff into one story. That´s my biggest flaw as
a writer right now. I just have the luck that all my ideas can be used in the same story,
universe, so I dump it all in an idea folder.

But I guess it´s better than having no ideas

Certainly. I do try my best to not fall into the trap of making a story have too many characters/arcs. It can make a pretty noisy story where nothing is happening and yet so much is happening. So, I stick to a different approach of, if an idea doesn't fit here then it'll fit elsewhere, hence my three other stories. Before this, I used to have trouble finishing a story because I have too many ideas, it caused me to stop writing many months or years in between a story. To solve that problem, I ended up writing three or four stories at the same time. Initially, there were more but I've simplified them since. Some stories I've grown attached to and others I decided weren't as interesting.

One of the stories I am working on was quite literally supposed to be a submission story to the Tapas contest, The Last Train. I never got around to writing it, before I know it, the deadline had passed. So, I ended up throwing it into the idea piles, then recently have been obsessed over it. I've made a couple of illustrations for it. Though, at this moment it's now a completely different story thanks to my new ideas.

I can relate to this so much
I´m not in the position to give advice, I´m probably a horrible writer, but one thing
that helps me a lot with that problem is to create mini stories with start and end
and then reduce the story to 12 panels. It maybe just works because I write comedy,
but I don´t know, it´s works really well. It also gives me the feeling of something I can
manage to finish and it forces me not to get lost in side plots because I only have
12 panels to reach the end. Another huge advantage is that it´s bite sized and
I have the feeling of having finihsed something when one of the stories is done.

That's a really great advice. I've made a couple of short stories before, but that was only possible because I decided to write a couple of lengthy stories. It's helped me write short stories; one I've even made thumbnails for from start to finish. It's an interesting process, and the feeling of making them does give perspective on speed, but like everything else there's a downside to that. The short stories lack momentum, just as you started writing it you're already planning the ending which is sometimes literally the next scene.

But that doesn't really change things, if you like writing then you like writing. xD
I could totally see myself writing short stories when I'm like really old. Especially if you've done everything, the simpler things can become the best pass time.

You can give yourself the option to add things later and theoretically then add panels.
I came up with this because I was really desperate because my story writing was just
piling up side stories and adding them into already existing side stories because they
were suddenly so interesting. But that´s not story writing, that´s being easily distracted.

When you watch Pulp fiction you can break down the whole movie into 12 panels.
That wouldn´t make a nice comic or movie. Then you can break down the 20 locations
/ scenes into 12 panels again. Some scenes can maybe be told in 3 panels in a comic,
some need 14, but you´ll find that out when you break down every scene and filter
out what´s really important and what not.

Anyway, this is just a theory and my method as a complete amateur writer + I´m autistic

I mean, everyone has their own learning process, autistic or not. Which is why I always try my best to avoid giving people advice on how to learn. How I learn is I like receiving feedback, both directly and indirectly. But I only ask for feedback from the people I know and trust. I also watch people and look for patterns. When they/I do something different or make a mistake, I learn quicker from that.

Anyway, don't doubt yourself. I see that you look down on your own writing, it's a good thing to be self-aware of your own flaws, but your ability is only limited by your own mind. And you seem to have turned one of those flaws into a strength.

It reminds me of a story structure people use where you take the Beginning, Middle and End and give them two plot points in between the three, from there they added more plot points in between the five points. I find that very helpful and informative, so your conclusion isn't all bad or less. It's just another way of learning how to structure your stories and ideas.

Anyway, I'll stop commenting now. Lmao I might've gotten us off track pretty badly.
