What's it like on Artstation?

It seems to be a more "high quality" deviantart from what I've heard and seen. Do you need to have a certain skill level to be allowed on there? Does your stuff ever get deleted?

No you don't need any specific level of ability to be there. It may be tougher to get seen though. In general Artstation is more for professional artists to showcase their portfolio.

I don't have an account on Artstation, but from what I can tell is it only has very advance artist on there, I was thinking about creating an account on there until I read in their site terms that if you aren't active on there for about a year they'll terminate your account including any earnings you make. So that's why I'm sticking with DeviantArt.

I'm on ArtStation! I actually perfer it over DeviantArt. although the site seems to always want to sell stuff!

Artstation isn't nearly as social, and is more of a portfolio/networking site for professional artists. It really punches above its weight in that regard, though. I have very few followers on Artstation, yet I've been approached twice for paid work directly though that site.

You don't need a particular skill level to join, but if you're a rookie, you'll mostly just be ignored there.

The one thing I absolutely HATE is that there's absolutely no way to hide my location on there. It demands you to fill out stuff such as your country and city, as well as your name (easier to get around as you can just use initials etc). SO unless I missed some setting, there's no way to hide your city and country displayed on your profile.

Idk i just hate having to give off my IRL info, even as vague as a city.

Artstation is pretty great. Mind you I'm like...already professional, so I don't feel weird about being on there. I think it's very intimidating for newer artist and for younger people (especially since there's quite a bit of NSFW on the front page some times. Photoreal boobies abound) They recently opened up their Artstation Learning to be free until the end of the year--which is really excellent, just a lot of really good lectures and lessons about how to do anatomy, how to draw, how to paint--so there are resources for people who want to learn and aren't professional yet.

But, it is a job website, so I'm there mostly to see their job board in my inbox and see their recourses, and I have barely art on there. When I upload art, I'm not uploading memes, I'm putting up my fanciest stuff (although I kind of forgot about my AS account all of 2020 lol. I gotta dust that thing off, I think I only have 2 arts on there right now)

@CursedBeasts Yeah, I think this is so companies will know when they're hiring you if you are a freelancer from a different country or not--especially if they want you to come and work in house. It's kind of like Artist LinkedIn.

I agree it is a bummer if you aren't using AS for business reasons, you can't just opt out.

Other than that it's like. Intimidating. But so far no one has tired to tear me a new one for not being an uber pwn professional artist so I think I'll use it for my best art haha.

I'm just not comfortable with people knowing my location as there's a lot of prejudice floating around these days against people from this location.

Edit: I just logged in and learned that you can actually type anything in the "city" field. So if you're just using it for personal purposes, you can type like "the void" so at least it will only doxx your country.
