What's one thing you wish you knew when you started your comic?

The bleed lines & border dimensions on where to keep the art. No one ever mentioned that in ANY type of comic making tutorial back in the day when I first started, so I was drawing stuff larger than it should've been.

3) Don't make the first time you draw something - be used in any comic. Practice first.

I dont draw it the "first time" when I initially draw the thing in my comic, but I dont draw it 100 times enough. I may draw a thing 2 or 3 times before "BAM"- I throw it in my comic.

The number one thing that I still bitch & groan about today- COLORING. I do okay in certain zones- and I'm still learning, but I wish I could learn a LOT more faster. There are some days where I hate my coloring.

I'm doing all of these and it helped a lot but I should have learned more about Photoshop before I started publishing my comic

Also, if you're planning on printing your comic, shading with black is pretty risky because CMYK printing often comes out darker than you think it's going to. Avoiding adding black to your colour palette means you can avoid this

rule of thumb of colouring for any artist never use full black or full white in and illustration, and if you really want to, use them use it sparingly like really sparingly

How to pace better. I seriously took months to get out a small section of comic story cause I didn't understand how to cut out minute things. (I.E. Walking through doors, stuff like that).

I don't really like my pacing much till I get to my extra side comic that I took much more care into making and planned out the pacing and paneling more. After that, I think my pacing has vastly improved on the comic. Just wish I understood it sooner.

Haha possibly that the webcomic industry was doing better a few years ago so I could've started then.

And also several keyboard shortcuts I know now that I have saved me a lot of time. My first pages took twice as long as the current ones and look worse.

Story is half what makes people subscribe. The other half is the art. Make a script for your story and make your characters relatable and understand their motivations.

That a story outline you can refer to is super helpful to your planning/pacing. Used to go along and keep the story in my head rather than place it onto paper only to forget details/why I did things and end up in a writing corner. Even if you don't stick to it 100% of the time, at least you know what you were building to!

I wish I recognized the importance of the storyboarding phase. After scripting my comic I was in a rush to thumbnail all the pages and get to work. Much later as I moved on to scanning in and finishing pages there were multiple instances where I found myself deep into the coloring phase and thinking that the whole composition was just too bland. I ended up doing a whole bunch of pages and panels over from scratch when I could have avoided the issue entirely just by being more thoughtful about the storyboards.

If I started of in webcomics with the knowledge of how to use art applications, then I could have improved on tremendous time-saving techniques a LOT sooner. sigh
