What's the deal with IMGUR?

So I've been at the webcomic lark for a few month now, and I've generally had a pretty good, if slow response from everywhere I've posted (or been completely ignored, which is par for the course these days as the internet is saturated with content), that is until I decided to try out IMGUR. So I posted a few backdated strips and within minuets I found my self downvoted so fast my head spun and receiving less than flattering comments. Do other people experience this, or is my comic just that sucky lol!

Well I laughed straight away lol, great stuff. Maybe you just need to hold tight and get a good lot of strips under your belt. The Webcomic world has turned a bit peculiar since I was on it about 15 years ago, people seem to be a little too critical of what is essentially free and not professionally edited or the like. Sites with down-votes are sucky, it's a negative experience with a quick 'no' and nothing constructive to balance it out. Anyway, I've subscribed!

One person points out that sometimes posting the same strip at different times of day can get different results; another person points out that hivemind kicks in past a certain point -- once you get a bunch of downvotes, others are more likely to read it with that mindset and join in.

Imgur was created by a redditor who wanted a very fast, easy way to share images on reddit.

Imgur ended up becoming a bastard child to reddit because of this, so a lot of the attitude you get on reddit, you typically get on Imgur - except it's also filled with idiots who make fun of reddit a lot and don't realize that if it weren't for reddit, their platform wouldn't exist lol Don't take anything these people tell you as personal.

Phew well I'm glad it's not just me! Just find it interesting as it's the only site where I've seen such negativity.

I've known other people who've gotten a really negative response on imgur too. I honestly think the site just has a bad attitude and unless you have the exact sense of humor that the main base of users has you're gonna get down voted/receive mean comments.

The site is also known for reposting people's art without giving them credit and that sort of thing... so I mainly avoid it.

I'd rather ask my parents about what they think about my (quite racy) comic than go to Imgur for advice. That's just a bad crowd.

Eeh yeah, it is pretty weird. My partner posted some ugly pokemon art I drew and it immediately started getting downvoted. It honestly laughed when I saw it because WOW I didn't think people would hate something so much so quickly. XD Which was funny considering the reddit thread linking to it was surprisingly popular. Different platform, different mentalities.

not to be a dick, but from a redditor's POV (glory be to snoo) if you're gonna outright call your own work "ugly" and then expect anything but downvotes, I mean /shrugs there's really not much else I can say about that xDD

then again, if you want to see the true hivemind of reddit at work, you go to /r/CatsStandingUp. No rules or prerequisites there on what might get upvoted/downvoted, and considering you're only allowed to post cats standing up with titles being "cat" and comments being "cat", it's quite a strange phenomenon to experience (warning: if you post anything that isn't cats or comment anything that isn't "cat" then you're gonna get banned lol) But it might help you guys a bit more if you're struggling with your work on reddit/imgur - there really isn't any quality control when it comes to what could get upvoted or downvoted, if they like it, it'll be upvoted, if it's a common repost it'll probably still get upvoted even though the comment section will be complaining, and if it's already been downvoted then it'll probably continue to be downvoted. The comment section is more worth your time, though stay close to the top and only take advice from those who are actually being constructive (/r/comic_crits is a good place for comic artists to be that's sorta safe from the karma bandwagon mentality)

Oh, no, like I drew a series of pokemon based off descriptions (I have a very outdated knowledge with the series), so when I say ugly I'm not referring to the drawing quality. (I also didn't post them, my partner posted them under his account ;d "Ugly art" is my own words which he did not use). Like I said, it was surprisingly popular everywhere else, just not on imgur itself.

@CHMsketches IMGUR is like YouTube, but for pictures, pretty much.

@Gaspode12 sorry you had to experience that! Imgur is related to Reddit, which is like the cesspool of the internet, so I am not surprised at that response! As for your comic, I think it's pretty hilarious! I really like your humor, it's not so on the nose and not very obscure, it really rides that line in between very well! Good job!

lol i was kinda hoping that was what you meant, like if it was intentional for the sake of laughs/requests/etc. lol still yeah imgur is weeeird and if you gotta choose one, choose reddit xD (at least reddit has dedicated communities that suit most people's needs).
