When do you consider an author popular on Tapas?

I find that I have completely arbitrary guidelines for this that make no sense. Like "holy smokes, they have XX likes!" I'm curious what these are for you when you're browsing?

its less a mark of merit or anything like that but i usually weight things based on name recognition because even someone with x number of subs/likes/follows regardless of how large or small the number is may still have a level of "brand recognition" which could be by way of noticing a writing or art style or a name

like i do look at the numbers as well but i also feel like the ability to have someone look and go "oh thats ___'s art/writing" means something

I probably wouldn't call somebody "a popular creator on Tapas" unless they had about 10,000 subs on Tapas, even if they were pretty popular elsewhere.

As good example, Theorah's most popular work, The Pauper's Prince, has a similar sort of following size to my comic, but Theorah has a pretty big following outside of Tapas, with a recently published print comic called "Speak Up!" and a lot of visibility in the Autistic community (like some famous mini comics about the Autism spectrum). So they're not necessarily huge on Tapas, but they're still a popular creator in other places.

10k subs is the point where seeing a comic, or especially a novel, I stop and go "Oh, wow, okay, those are some serious numbers. This person is killing it at Tapas."

yeah I would agree that 10K subs on Tapas would mean they are popular. But really it could be different for everyone. If you think about it, 100 subscribers is quite a lot already as well.

In the early years I was on Tapas (2015-2016) I used to consider popular people that could get into the reccomended homepage after few episodes or updates. Tapas promoted a lot of comics it considered worthy to be on their platform from indie artists. Some of them were also able to join the paid to unlock system for their new comics.
Then this system kinda failed when they added too much "WUF" and pay to unlock manhua from Asia and Tapas had too much of those series to spam in the home.

There still is a "Free to" section but it's really nothing compared to how it was... If you get featured there you are really a pro for me.

It doesn't matter if something has 100; 1,000; 10,000; or a million subscribers. If I never heard of it or seen it, it is unpopular to me.

If it's about numbers, I have a different standard of what is popular for community or commercial series, and take in consideration what genre and style they have.

Yeh I have over 170 subs atm and for me, it's honestly if the person is committed to reading what you got. I've seen people with thousands of subs, yet their view counts don't reach that number. I'm a little weary about looking at other people subcounts because sub4sub is still a thing (sadly). So far, I get more views then I do subs on my newer episodes, but I'm worried about it dwindling.... especially after hiatus (I plan on making shorts to string people along). In the end, I WILL say I'm happy that I have loyal readers in THAT amount.

It is almost the end of the year and I did publish my comic on January so I am glad it got to that point. Still tho, I am trying to build my reputation on YouTube which honestly, I HIGHLY recommend people do. Especially with shorts going to be monetized in the near future.

By the way, anyone know how to change their name? I try changing it to "That Mexican Stick Figure" on Tapas to match up with my brand, but it won't accept it. What's up with that?

at this point my brain just glosses over the premiums nowadays. its just a sea of sparkles and pale pretty people. i do not see it. begging on my knees for some flavor. why are there so many vilainesses
