“Well, not exactly?” Melvin said. “After a certain point, a soul becomes impossible to revive. Men who died earlier in the war weren’t able to be transplanted into robots, and Reborn robots who were destroyed beyond repair weren’t able to be restored to their old selves, even if their bodies were fixed up to the best of their mechanics’ abilities.”
He shrugged. “I guess human souls have to be untethered from Earth eventually. But not me, though. I’ve been a robot since day one of my life. I’m not sure what’ll happen to me if I shut down.”
