Who's your favorite fictional main character, and why?

@rinari I've never read Marlowe (I know, I'm sometimes a terrible person) but have seen some of the film/TV adaptations and I assuming the adaptations are at least a little faithful, think the two characters are fairly different. Marlowe, I think is a bit lawful neutral on the alignment scale (maybe not law as we know it, but law as it relates to him) whereas the Op is probably Chaotic Good. He often takes justice into his own hands. In some ways, I wonder if Batman wasn't originally based on him (once they phased out the killing side of him). Love hardboiled fiction, though. I've got the Big Sleep on one of my shelves. I'll have to add it to my summer reading list.

John Marston from Red Dead Redemption, hands down.

Murderer, criminal, renegade, dutiful husband and loving father. I've yet to find a character who is better written or as 'real' as he was.

Saber from Fate/Stay Night (among others)

She looks good, has cool armor and with a dutiful and honorable personality. It's so hard for me to find female anime characters that I like (and I do Think Saber sometimes gets screwed ove in the Fate series) but when it comes to anime she's definetely my no. 1 pick.

Video Games
Samus Aran - Metroid Series

Nuff said. The only blemish on an otherwise perfect character is the Other M game. Needless to say I raged!

TV Shows (I couldn't pick just one)
Al Swearengen - Deadwood

I don't even like westerns. But Swearengen is probably one of the most realized characters I've ever seen in any medium. Smart, calculating, rough as hell around the edges and willing to go to almost any lengths to realize his goals. He's also funny as hell and has a soft spot for some people/matters.

John Luther - Luther

Again, I'm not really that interested in crime dramas. But John Luther is such a captivating character. He's a good-natured short-fuse mess of a genius detective. Hampered only by his own personality flaws.

Movies
Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Carribbean

Such a wonderful character caught in such a so-so Movie series. If not for Johnny Depps unique pirate I'm not sure I would've even watched any of the films beyond the first one, and I friggin love pirates.

This goes way back, but I think it was Peter Pevensie from the "Chronicles of Narnia". I remember reading this when I was a child and thinking I want to be like him - noble, brave and he always protected the smaller children. I don't know, he seemed like someone you'd be lucky to have by your side.

Each of them have one thing in common that drew me to them and that was their open confidence in battle and life, they are not bothered about anything as far as the series go
