I've opened this thread elsewhere and I really like the way it's turned out, so here we go (Note: I realize it's been done before, but this thread has a slightly different twist, just read on)

Here's a thread for you to shine some light on your characters (please, upload a picture for us to admire). Tell us

1) why you (and we) should care about them and

2) show some love for at least another artist's characters (adding a link to their characters and/or comics and notifying them you are spreading the love would be nice, too)!

Why I care about Shanti:
She is an assassin with principles, who would never hurt an innocent. You may think she's just another dirty vigilante, but she goes after people who are, effectively, above and beyond the law. Can you blame her for that? Plus, she's an extremely skilled nurse who has volunteered in war zones. Even though she has witnessed the horror humanity can bring upon itself, she is still an idealist.

Why I care about Sekhmet:
She is a very scarred woman with an awful past that will haunt her for the rest of her life. She has made some horrible decisions which she regrets deeply, and she has sought reparation for them. You may see her as a villain, and she considers herself as such, but you should really give her a chance. Almost nobody has ever given her one, and this certainly helped her spiral deep into a very dark place.

She is an abundant, spoiled young princess who takes protecting her kingdom really seriously. Nobody really believes she's cut for action, yet she marches on (preferably, while drinking tea). And she's really fun! Good for her!

I really like this topic too! So many comics have a pretty good story but their characters are so bland and forgettable and it kills the entire comic. It's so difficult sometimes to write good characters, it's so crucial to have thought and feeling behind the people that will drive your comic and relate to the readers, which you obviously have done

A character that I instantly fell in love with was Tula from @joannekwan's Demon House. She's a character that knows who she is, and its comfortable with who she is, which I haven't seen from a main character in god knows when. It's really refreshing to see this bright, cheery character that does demons favors because theyre her roommates. Like holy crap, how crazy?? She's so laid back and is willing to help others and inspires herself, which is really admirable and fun to read. You'd think the demons would be the most interesting part of the story, but both the human characters and demons are equally as interesting and engaging which is pretty neat all around!

I don't know too much about Dallas and Schaeler from @bmacbride's Memento Mori, only that they both have really interesting connections with the dead and will interact at some point. I'm excited for this story to develop, it's been set up pretty well so far. They're two totally different people, Schaeler's a drunken schoolmaster who sees his dead child and Dallas sees dead people all the time, whether he likes it or not. Schaeler seems like a fatherly, broken and depressed soul while Dallas seems broken but dealing with it more positively. Both characters have interestingly similar situations (with their interactions with the dead, and alcohol addiction) but have two totally different ways of responding to them, I can't wait to see these two find each other so I can watch this story unfold

SO OK for my comic Robo Hole i dont have a lot of characters in the pages that are up so far. but one of the main characters is Parsnip Grace-

why i care about Parsnip: parsnip is a really moody perfectionist teenager with anger issues and a lot of sarcasm. she tries to stay out of everybodys business and just deal with her own stuff but ends up in the middle of a robot/alternate universe war in her tiny suburb. so she uses her smarts to fight while proving herself and everybody else wrong about her that shes not just a hopeless wet blanket

i havent been here super long so i havent read a lot of comics. but i HAVE read the awesome Hazy Daze by @pastchaser
i really like the main character akira. i mean theres a lot of characters i really like and i feel like i'll end up liking pat the most. but SO far im into akira because its already kind of in the beginning mode of the comic but he already has SOOO much tragic back story with a jerk father and on his way to becoming a wizard or some bizz. so i cant help but root for him cuz who doesnt love a magical underdog

Why I (and you should) care about Moran Tawfeek:
She got her superpowers of wind manipulation when trying to unravel the mystery behind the death of her father, the most infamous supervillain in history. She's a muslim trans girl who's moved around a lot in her life, and despite a furious temper and discrimination wherever she goes, she's caring and hasn't lost faith. She's being thrust into a terrifying situation she has no control over, and now has to fight for freedom.

why I (and you should) care about Sebastien, from Les Normaux:
He's the last wizard in his family, a kind young man living in Paris with his vampire boyfriend. Despite many loving and accepting relatives though, his parents don't accept that he's gay and he never talks to them. He's a little awkward maybe, with lots of brilliant and interesting friends, and he's extremely easy on the eye!

Well, the reason I care about my characters is because they're very friendly to themselves and to others. And no matter what situation they may face, at the end of the day they always have a smile on their face.

I care about Glad (from Mighty Glad)
because he's an honorable warrior who has lost his way and also has no memory. I mean, you kinda feel sorry for him and want him to succeed in his quest for survival.

Why should you care about Raleigh from Wanderlust Blues by Sid Bane
Because he's fucking awesome, that's why. And he's half-chimera and can turn into one and fuck shit up. Is that not badass enough? He also has a distinct look that I adore, and has an adopted daughter! And he has a funny accent! And Sid draws expressions really well, Raleigh has the best and his anger, confusion, fear just stand out so well. I loooove this character.

Why should you care about Tyler from What-Sexual?? by Kai Lynx
Tyler is going through a lot of pain and I think we all have at some point, you don't have to be having gender crisis to also go through pits of despair, so he's really relatable at least to me. You want to root for him to get better, and generally with characters like this in anime, etc. only make me want to kill them off. With Tyler it's a different struggle and Kai portrays it very well.

Why should you care about Akane from Grassblades by Anna Landin
She's too adorable. Also, she's pretty mysterious. The only one surviving in a pile of bodies? Selective muteness? A strange affinity for a grumpy man who just wants her to go away? Possible teleportation powers!? Yes, yes. These are all things that make me curious of her and I want to know more.

Why should you care about Masahiro and Akane as much as I do? Well, because they - awkward, grumpy, silent and weird as they are - are stuck together by circumstance, and are making the best they can of the situation. Did Masahiro ever dream of having an adopted kind-of-daughter of his very own? No, no, no, no - not even a little bit. But now that this silent, weird kid insists on following him around, he does the best he can, awkward, grumpy and unsure as he is.

Add to this some missing body parts, a journey of mysterious purpose and secret supernatural powers, and we end up with a recipe for a more interesting life that Masahiro ever signed up for.

Why should you care about Boulder from Boulder and Fleet?
Because Boulder is a literal huge, lumbering bear, with all the physical power that entails - and is, at the same time, really sweet and kind and caring - and curageous! Did a mine full of lizard-people miners just cave in with a tremendous explosion? Never fear - Boulder will run towards the explosion, and save as many people as he can! Three cheers for Boulder, Adventurer for Hire (and his rad partner Fleet!).

You should care about the characters from The Woken, because one day, when it's better known than Harry Potter, you'll want to be able to brag to people that you were reading it before the spate of shitty movies and fan spin-offs. 50 Shades of Woken? Screw that, you were there and cared about the characters way back when it was just another indie webcomic altruistically made by its brash and handsome creator.

Why you should care about Jack from @oliviasstephen's Alone:

Because he's real. He's not just a character that exists to fill a role in a story. The comic only shows a fraction of his life (who needs to see him using the toilet or sleeping for 5 pages straight, etc?), and it doesn't pretend to have shown me everything there is about him. The comic successfully presents him as a real human being whose full depth/complexity cannot possibly be explored through a story.

Why you should care about Ethan from my Heart of Keol:

He's an oversized teddy bear of a young man. Even when ogling at boobs, he manages to not look creepy because he just oozes harmless teddy bear vibes. He's been through some painful stuff that he doesn't like to talk about, partly because it's simply private, but also because HE doesn't know how to deal with it in his heart. But he's gonna have to face it and figure it out, sooner or later...

My character Kasmer from Starve the Beast starts out as an arrogant jerk. He's the right hand man of a dictator and doesn't really take anything seriously. But when his mentor dies, his world is turned upside down, causing him to question his entire life, whether he truly was a monster, and if there's any semblance of a way that he can make amends.

I've always loved non-classic heroes--unbelievably flawed characters who struggle to one thing good in their lives. That's Kasmer!

You should care about @AnnaLandin's Masahiro. Why? Because his character is written on his face. Seriously, from his first battle with bandits to finding Akane and watchign out for her, Masahiro doesn't even really need dialogue to communicate what he's thinking/feeling. It's all in the grin, the smirk, the wince--main reasons Grassblades has become one of my favorite comics here so far. Read it!

Why I care about: Darkness Darkworld :
He is a nice yet evil person. He cares about everyone but has a temper problem which leads him to hurt the ones he cares about. He is a reckless fighter even though he doesn't fight as a kid. He has a problem with controlling his dark side when it breaks out. (he is the one with the black eyes and grayish sweater)

Why I care about Nehneh:
Nehneh even though he was raised to be a murderer he tries to become a better person. Although 9/10 times his intentions are pure he ends up some how killing anyways. Deep down he wishes for a lot of things but instead of showing it he just murders to hide it but is slowly getting better.

Why I care about Min from Fail by error:
she has a lot of problems but yet she accepts who she is with all of her faults. She's a very lovable character and person.

Silerna and kitty-cat from my comic Friendly Neighbours. Silerna is nice weirdo and easygoing person, the one she loves most? Her cat! Silerna loves the summer, hates the winter alot(cold and snowy weather). She likes to prank others as long they don't get hurt , she hates it when she get pranked with instead (well I hate that too)

Hop is my attempt at an exaggerated parody of myself. Self Defeat is sorta a way to channel my self deprecating humor. Sometimes the things he does are exaggerated (or fabricated) parts of my life, and sometimes they are right on the nose. Blurring the line between the two is a lot of fun.

@abigailkbacilla Ack! Princess Massie would have been my post as well. Gotta agree that Massie is tons of fun, and she definitely tries hard no matter what! If someone has gotten this far and hasn't already, check out Commander Princess Massie

@callmeshane Cho from Life Can Succubus is just an interesting concept all together. I like the design, her dialogue and have already grown sympathetic to her plight of being a succubus that is afraid of sex. Its a bit too early in the series for me to get too specific, but I really like the direction.

I really Identify with Leslie his neighbors don't get his cool jokes and retail employees are always keeping him down! Another series that is a bit in its early stages, but I look forward to the mostly extraordinary saga.

Awesome thread idea!

Mine is from my Naruto-Spin off series, Konoha Delinquents.

Its an ensemble cast of 10 characters but the one I want to talk about is Bokuto.

If your familiar with Naruto, you'll know that its a show about Ninjas.
Well.. Bokuto is a kid who wants to be a Samurai instead and wants nothing to do with Ninjas. He insults their culture, the tools they use, the way they fight, etc. I've written Bokuto to be a loud mouthed, rude and arrogant young man who genuinely starts to become annoying to even the reader! (as to me, that would be a sign that I'm doing something right if the reader is like "sigh... shut up already!")

Outside of that however, Bokuto is a way for me to poke fun at the Naruto series and say things that I've always wanted to say if I existed in that world. Like when everyone acts surprised when someone evades an attack by using a shadow clone for example. Bokuto would expose how silly and repetitive that is in a comedic way but to him, he's actually annoyed and being super critical of his peers!

He also uses a wooden sword and thinks that when he puts on the jumper around his waist, that hes actually being protected by some ancient samurai armour. I cant wait to start telling his story in the comic lol.
