It's just often I'll see the audience a BL title has and many of those readers only read BL series, like they might be subbed to a couple comedy gag-a-days, but they're only the really popular ones that are promoted and are always in the popular section when they update.
I think the concern here is, how to grab these readers' attention to diversify their taste and perhaps lead them to more lgbt+ series that portray same-sex relationships a little better.

Nah BL is kinda notorious for having a lot of poor comics. Much like romance genres, slice of life, gag a day, it's flooded with a lot of mediocre comics compared to other genres. I'm not being a dick, this is a legit problem I see comic artists discuss and the reason no one takes the genre seriously.

Having spoken with a gay male creator before on this subject, the reason there's so much disdain towards BL comics on Tapastic isn't so much because they feature "teh gays" as it is that most of them are pure crap when you take away the BL tag even without getting into the issues of how gay culture is represented in said comics.

To put it another way, BL comics as a rule of thumb are oft considered the McDonalds of webcomics. One billion yaoi fangirls served.

I'd agree with this. Like just change one of the two boys into a girl and it's your run-of-the-mill trashy shoujo. Like 50 Shades of Grey.

Yeah no, I won't argue with that. It's because the peeps who get off on it can't turn to mainstream media for their kicks, so BL fangirls are a lot more forgiving than any other genre's fans. Which ofc means the mediocore BL comics are all basically the same story with the same tropes. But that doesn't mean there aren't good BL comics / artists, and I feel it's unfair to those creators /readers to label them all as some tropey-run-of-the-mill crap.

I'm not, I see anti yaoi people who really do believe it's representation. They think as long as a gay person is in media it's representation. The yaoi/BL arguments in comic forums is a mess so don't know what to really say i'm just saying what I see. Not everything is simple shrugs

ahaha I guess that means my comic too. I do try to finish a page everyday though I'm currently building up a little buffer so there are a little less updates these days. But I'm sorry if it's annoying x.x actually I've been a little worried about it. I can totally understand it gets old to see the same comics on the 1st page all the time. I think they should change the comic home page to the 'trending' tab actually, since that changes very often.

Some of this post makes me feel bad for having a BL comic. Honestly I'm doing my best to make a more legit romance between my characters. I have been told by many that I'm doing good at it too and have had people that don't like BLs but like my comic. My goal is to have a balance between story plot and romance. I also want my story to be well entertaining to anyone. I understand some people won't like it though and that's OK.

I feel like people to need not group them all and say all BL comics are bad. I can agree there are a lot of BLs that fit what people are talking about here, but there ARE some out there that don't fit the stereotypes and are nice comics.

True! But I also think there's a difference between series that choose to put 'BL' directly on their thumbnail and those who don't.

Like for Neon Glow I don't see the BL tag on your thumb (unless I'm blind xD) and it instead shows two guys and a cat in a way that's not overtly romantic. So you can definitely draw in people who would otherwise avoid BL like the plague. And I think that's definitely fitting for your comic; romance isn't the main focus, so why would you want to market it as Boy's Love if the love part is secondary to an action adventure. It opens yourself to a wider audience.

For other series that do put the BL tag on directly, they know their market. They want to attract that market, and they'd be perfectly happy if they don't attract anyone outside of that market. (imho)

My main qualm is that I don't like bad stories - and BL mostly has awful stories. Flat, repetitive and, yes, tritely homophobic. But they got a lot of steam on several webcomic platforms over the years, so they are not going away (just like bad stories will haunt the webcomic world until the end of time). So, there is a market, Tapastic and other platforms aren't creative or brave enough to promote other comics, so they keep on pushing for what generates revenue, so that's the price we pay for it

@Lindsette I am also a lesbian and I only know of maybe three comics other than mine that have good lesbian characters - not there to please your average straight porn fantasy/crazy/killed in the end/whathaveyou. If you know more, please do let me know!

No BL tags have ever been on my comic's banners. I never wanted to mark it BL because I wanted people to give my comic try even if they are not into BLs. You have the rest right about the banner. Those were my intentions. It still hints that it's a BL with how Jake is noticing Zedof, and Zedof is un-aware of it. Mostly how the relationship is. lol

I love BLs, there are a lot I don't read. I get a kick more on the build up and how they fall in love over the fan service and smexy moments. I want more slow or light BLs. ^ u ^
