Will a one shot be a good way to start?

Hello!
I have never really made a comic, ever. just to note you on that.
I have a basic plot that i am working on, but i'm certain i will most likely work on the script for, idk, a year? PFF.
Meanwhile, i still want to start making comics as well as getting a response for my comic concept. I was just curious, would
it be a good idea to make a one shot of the general concept of the plot? or should i let it be, and just make uh, other one
shots or improvised comics? idk ;;;

I'm basically curious of what people think about one shots to kinda tease a possible future comic, if that makes sense ; v ;

I like one shots, since I can't invest myself in a long comic immediately. If a shorter version/teaser can catch my interest, I would prefer to read that first before the big one.

One shots are a great idea, whether they lead into your long form comic or not! They're great to use for experimentation and learning, since you don't have to invest as much time and energy into them.

Making a long form comic is kind of an insane commitment, I think it's a good idea to make something you can actually finish within a reasonable amount of time. You'll learn a lot about yourself. It might be a good way to earn some loyal fans, too. The fans that carry over from one project to another are becoming invested in you, not just your project. ;D

Though at the end of the day, you should do whatever you feel passionate about. I started with a long form comic because I just didn't have any short stories I was interested in creating.

I'm reminded of the oneshot/short comic that the creators of Death Note did as a sort of... pre-trial? for Death Note itself. It was technically using the same universe and even one of the characters, but the subject matter and tone were extremely different from the end result. I'm not sure what sort of oneshot you're interested in, but if you have a plot that you don't want to spoil your readers entirely on, shorter vignettes set in the same universe or otherwise tangentially related to the story feel like a good way to wet your feet and see if there's any interest from readers. Just... be careful a shorter vignette doesn't end up turning into an epic that becomes your actual comic.

oneshots are nice for easing yourself into it, and for practicing different styles and testing out ideas. id say theyre a great way to get started.

id also say, understanding comics by scott mccloud (followed by reinventing- and making-) are a good reference material for beginning in comics, theyre used as required reading in degree courses.

Oneshots are great ways to practice making comics when you are new. It's very likely the first and last page will be very different in terms of artstyle development. Since it's a oneshot you can take your new learned skills into the next project (maybe a longer series).

One shots areee THEEeeeEe besst. basically everyone else has said why they're good. One thing to keep in mind is once you start posting your one shot (on tapas at least) be sure not to post it all at once, this will make it so each update shows up in the fresh section and you have a better chance for people to see it :V Also in my case people were really excited for each new update and it gave me a taste of what running a larger webcomic would be like. So YaaaAaaH :V
