So in "Rigamarole" section 5 I create the word "Doggishly."
So "doggedly" is a word, which means as if you're being berated or pestered into doing something.
"Doggishly" means to do something in a dog-like way. In the story's context, it means to follow obediently, like a dog who has been scolded or mistreated.
Riley’s waiting for me just outside room 202 like an ill-used puppy. He looks up with an expression I’ll call relief if it makes anyone feel better - a particle of relief smaller than the flake of somebody’s body glitter he grinds into the floor with the toe of his sneaker-
“Let’s go.”
He follows me doggishly - doggedly, though I haven’t said anything - yet - until we find our corner in the lunchroom.
We could have gone outside…maybe…
We look normal.
But it’s easier to pressure - persuade him - when he’s worried about me getting too loud - drawing somebody’s attention.
I swear we look normal.
It’s not a problem. Just a brother and sister having lunch.
“As long as you don’t act up. No one will look this way.”
I can’t tell if I’m an angel or a demon. His savior, or just one more thread in the puppet strings-
