Worst cases of popular media inspired names on children?

When I was still able to work I heard a parent scold their toddler who was called Renesmee.

That's the name of Bella & Edward's child from twilight. You know the one that Edward eats out of Bella's womb? The one that Bella's ex-werewolf boyfriend declares is his soulmate when it's approx 2 hours old? You know. That one.

So, what's your worst experience?

That's rough. I tend to forgive the name if it fits in with the general naming of the country you're in, but something that sticks out and is an obvious reference to something just invites bullying for the poor child.

Ergo Renesmee when girl names in my country are stuff like Sari, Saima, Pauliina, Laura etc etc. Very different sounding names

We have a friend who named their child Jedi for the middle name.

My friend has a patient who named her children Jacob Black and Edward Cullen!!!!

In the first place is weird to use names like Edward in a latin country, they sound out of place but that's not bad... But she literally used last names like Cullen and Black as their second name!! The kid is Edward Cullen López Ruiz, or something. What the hell!?

Yes I can already imagine the bullying.
My birth name (which I don't use and don't really want to reveal, you'll understand why) is popular in English-speaking countries, but when I was born in 1980 in France it was quite rare. I got it because my parents were living in Ireland, and were completely oblivious of the reputation it had in France. It was known only from low quality TV series in which it was generally given to superficial, idiotic characters.
As a kid, I was bullied because of that. As an adult, I got plenty of surprised comments, because people don't expect a person called like that to be like me.

It's pretty depressing to me. I can understand people think my parents were not super cultured to give me a name inspired from stupid series, but that's depressing to know they think such kids have no chances to become more sophisticated...

A good rule of thumb is to not name kids after characters until the series they're in is either finished or the current arc is done. I heard one about kids named Daenerys long before the end of the show, and one about a guy that tried to name their kids after Dante and Vergil sometime before DMC5 came out (though the oof in the Vergil side is up to interpretation), and failed.

I have friends with odd surnames and they already get insensitive jokes about those, imagine first names. Always keep in mind that, if the original character isn't forgotten or isn't the coolest thing in the work, there's a lot of bullying in store for the poor kid.

Btw there are many names that are forbiden by law ( thank you very much!! ). And the list is hilarious and sad because many people have those names and are looking to change them.

Not sure if it counts but my cousin was born on Christmas Eve so they named her 'Merry' (also kind of a 'parents don't really know English' issue as well)

I haven't run into too many outside of a lot of white kids being named after anime characters (but, normal Japanese names that are not exclusive to anime like say 'Naruto' or "Sephiroth' or something... which are apparently names that HAVE been given to children just none that I know personally) which is REALLY odd for me, cause Asian parents like mine living here give their kids 'white people' names to keep from from getting picked on for having Asian names. (or give them 2 names, you get your white name, and your Asian name) but not... weird in general I guess??

I've honestly really only found this REALLY weird when the parents named their kids Japanese names... but... pronounce the name wrong. "Her name is High-kay-roo. It means LIGHT in Japanese" I just... why research a name and it's meaning for you kid but not how to pronounce it??

Omg, I forgot that at my old school there is a toddler boy named Hermione. This one upsets me because 1) it is a name hard to pronounce/spell, so people will always get his name wrong.
2) people will make fun of a female name being given to a boy, just to be assholes.
3)the elephant in the room is that this name is most popular because of Harry Potter. And people are unkind about "nerd" stuff.

I was named after a popular hollywood actor during the 90's who is named kurt russell. I think my mom had a crush on him.

This would've been okay if I wasn't a 5ft tall asian girl who looks too young for her age. I don't mind it now since I'm used to it. But it does get me into odd situations sometimes.

Oh and one time I knew a dude named Sasuke who btw isn't even japanese

Hm.. I have a friend who named their kid after Nala from the Lion King, I believe? She's Peurto Rican. It's different enough to be unique, but not enough to be "of all the names out there, you went with this??"

Also had a mutual on Facebook and Instagram who named her kid Zelda after the game series. I don't know her ethnicity, but she might be Hispanic? If anything, she passes as white, so.. Zelda's not too crazy of a name in her case either lol

I remember when Skyrim first came out Bethesda held a contest that if anyone had a baby born on the release day and named them Dovahkiin they'd receive free Elder Scrolls games for life or something like that

also my mom made up my name by taking Cher (the singer) and adding an "A" at the end. virtually no one knows how to pronounce it when they first see it. yay for being cursed for life
