Worst cases of popular media inspired names on children?

Honestly, I feel that naming your children like this, does give them the right to dislike you - you are basically telling them that mommy and daddy really liked this character more, than that they considered your future embarrassment or bullying. Or worse; that they might like this character more than who you are, and want you to be that character. It just shows that they aren't considerate of you, and I think as a child, that is a very legitimate thing to be mad over when it comes from your parents.
It's a little different I think when the names start to slide into 'in honour of, but passable as a name'. Like naming a child Edward, or Bella, that's still a normal name. Even naming them 'leesi' (lucy) or Khal, I can see it pass for a slightly weird but normal name. But Elrond, Gandalf, Naruto etc. are all names I'd consider genuinely inconsiderate.

I actually see no problem in Daenerys name. In fact I love all the Targaryen names, they sound very royal. Daenerys also is canonically called Dany. I think as long as it sounds good with the surname, it would be okay (I think it's the special problem for Slavic counties, to make name+surname sound good together). So what if you call your child the name of "crazy woman who perished a city", people still call their children Adolf and Joseph, don't they?

You guys are saying the name of Elrond or Gandalf is not appropriate, then how about Eldar? Is it inappropriate too? Meanwhile it's a legit Scandinavian and Turcic name.

Names are the words that just mean something, most of them just mean something in Greek and in Hebrew, doesn't mean we cannot make new ones They may sound stupid in your language or country, but just as well those Greek names probably sounded stupid a few hundred years ago.

I definitely do agree though that it's very strange to call you child Hikaru or Li Qing if you are Europeans living in Europe and even worse - to pronounce it wrong.

I have no particular feeling to the name of Renesmee other that is sounds like someone pucked, but you know, it's subjective

And someone Japanese naming their son Pikachu.

I personally think it's all about how the names fit into the language spoken. Daenarys/Dany fits nicely into an English speaking situation but for example in Finland it would not work well because the pronounciation does not match the spelling from a Finnish point of view. Sansa on the other hand would work really well here.

For me I think it's okay to name a child after a character IF there are no negative connotations and that the name fits the language. Let's be real here, a lot of people have probably named their children after popular figures like the Beatles, so why not fictional characters too. Some people with common names end up hating their names or getting bullied, too.

I mean... Legend says my parents got my name from a brand of frozen vegetables, so maybe a fictional character's name isn't that bad.

Sure, I agree with your point. Just as well in Russian, Daenerys will sound strange (mostly because of "male" ending suffix, it would be better is she was... dunno, Daeneya), but Sansa and Arya will sound okay. Nonorthodox sure, but suitable.
Also some names from USSR times are much worse. Like, we had girls who were named Dazdraperma (short from "Hail the first of May") and believe me they sound strange and vomiting even in Russian.

Btw I would probably be okay with strange name, it beats having 4 friends named the same as you at your apartment complex, and always having 5 more people named the same in your class. So creative, much wow =)

I think Naruto was actually named for a character in his universe too, so naming a child after him makes it a strange fan name inception. That and it's also the name of a Japanese fish cake...

Well I mean, Zelda is an actual name with a long history. Meanwhile Renesmee is not. It's mash of two names Stephanie Meyer thought was cool, I guess. So my problem is kinda that it's the only link the child has to it, if that makes sense? Like my name is unique in my country, but I was told the meaning behind it and why I was given it as a child, so if anyone asked about it I could explain. But you... shouldn't? You don't explain your name to every person you met, right? Well the people may ask, but you can always say your parents named you like that, you shouldn't explain the origin of the name to everyone =) And there are a bunch of names that are just a mash of two names someone thought cool
I agree that Facebook and Pikachu are not cool names (of course, because why even someone would think them okay??), but let's face it - some people are just stupid.

It might be a problem with society but there are things you have to prevent as a parent, since no one's going to look at themselves in the mirror and go "you know, shaming people for their names is the real cringe" if they're already jerks.

But yeah, lots of common names have weird origins and they lost their strangeness as they got used more! It's still good to choose names that aren't too obvious to be on the safe side. And be careful the character isn't a particularly disliked one by most people.

Eh, I've had to explain mine fairly often in social situations(as in, someone has directly asked why or where the name comes from), not to mention spelling it every.single.time you deal with someone not from your immediate family. Hell, my grandfather still doesn't know how to pronounce it. Also having a unique name that is only refenrenced in a very polarizing series is nothing but inviting trouble as far as I see it.

I just don't think that doing something that will for sure invite bullying onto your child is something a parent should do, ever. Is the actual problem the bullying? For sure, but that's never going to go away.

Zelda was also the name of F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife in the 1920s so I wouldn't say that it would make a difference if it were based on a video game, but the people who named their child Dovakhin were assholes I'm gonna say it now.

I threaten all the time to name my future children Siegfried or Zenobia... my parents gave me such a difficult name that my father misspelled it on my birth certificate. I go by my middle name now...makes it so much easier at starbucks. My sister named her son Irenaeus... Now that I think about it daddy-o picked a rare variant spelling for her name too...

My brother had a friend from Ukraine who went by Max. When they were little kids my brother used to call him Maximoose. We weren't sure why until my brother explained that Max was named after the character in Gladiator, Maximus. Well not the worst name he could have ended up with.
