Well, there are different degrees of bad movies. If it's like, dunno, the other Avatar movie we don't talk about where it's just bad and visibly misinterpreted, you've got a chance because now thousands want the original better work. And what'd you know, they are now getting a second adaptation with people who want to fix those mistakes.
If it legitimately gets offensive (taking an example of my comic, making the main character lecherous because he's bi, or "justifying" some bad actions instead of the whole theme of atonement), people can get back to you thinking the original work is also offensive, and you'll be known as the creator that did Bad Thing for a long long time. A salary doesn't matter if after that you just get nothing since no one's watching it. It's more luck based but my high school had some prejudice towards people reading Percy Jackson because the movie didn't immediately look like the plot was changed.
