Writer Beware and ways to stay safe

When I first signed on to Tapas I got queries from other web sites asking me to go with them and they'd make me money etc. I reported them and Tapas did their thing.

Nothing new there, nefarious people in publishing is as old as anything.

There are a few warning websites and blogs out there that every writer should have bookmarked. This is one of them. Yes, it says Science Fiction Writers but its good for any writer. The person who runs it also has a blog. I check them out regularly as do several other authors I know.

yes, I found an article by them when I was researching whether to sign with a company. Fyi the company was not even 1 year old. thankfully I turn them down because I was ghosted by the company when I asked questions

I need to do some more research and see if I can find a couple others. I've gotten lazy and just rely on Writer Beware. They provide a solid service. So glad they were able to be of help.

yeah, because some publishing companies is sketchy but look legit

I've gotten the same thing for my instagram art before. "Ohh we are a prestigious art magazine let us publish you! You have to pay us first though as a fee for printing uwu" It's especially nefarious for young people who don't know how things work. I always feel like putting a curse on people that do that.
