Writer Looking for Artist to Make Manga

Hey guys, what's up!

Just gonna give a brief introduction about me first: I'm Neel, a college student who loves to write in his free time. My dream is to make a manga like thousands of other people lol but I can't draw so I'm looking for an artist who would be interested in working with me. I like to write all kinds of genres, including suspense, thriller, action, adventure, sci-fi, etc.

So this will be an unpaid collaboration for now. I will be happy to pay the artist an equal share, if not a majority of the profits, if and when we start making money off of the manga. I will also do storyboards for the work because I understand they take up a lot of time unless the artist likes/wants to do the storyboards. I currently have two stories that I'd be interested in having someone work with me on. Please read on for more info about the stories...

Hikaru Rising

Length: Series (very long)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Seinen(ish)
Synopsis: Hikaru is a fallen angel who is banished from the angel realm for his arrogance by his own father, the King of Angels. He is sent to Earth as nothing but a mere, mortal baby with no memories of his past life as an angel. Hikaru lives a peaceful life on a farm with his old caretaker and other orphans until one day, a demon attacks, killing his entire family. Hikaru then leaves the farm and embarks on a journey to find a way to return to the angel realm while trying to overcome the obstacles that stand in his way.

Synopsis: Damon Zovolsky is a 30-year-old, up and coming plastic surgeon, who has already made a name for himself as one of the best. However, he is quite morally dubious, often taking bribes and neglecting to follow certain healthcare insurance regulations, as well as other questionable activities. On a spring day like any other, he is approached by a shady customer, requesting a complete facial transformation. This man has no paperwork, ID, or any medical history whatsoever but offers to pay a large sum of cash. Damon accepts the deal and operates on this man. A few days later, while watching the news, Damon realizes that the man he operated on is the serial killer everyone has been worrying and talking about. It isn't long before the man returns to Damon, seeking another facial transformation as he was so impressed with the first one. How will Damon escape this situation? Who is this serial killer and why is he so fixated with Damon?

If you do find an artist perhaps start with a one shot just to see how well you two work together because a long series is...well... kinda intimidating, not saying it's impossible to find an artist who's willing but it's not easy ._. every writer I know went through Hell to find a good artist. Also I'd recommend looking on DeviantArt as well if you haven't already, they have project forums and I've seen writers find artists there. Finding an artist on Tapastic will be a tough one because most artists are already drawing their own comics and manga.

Hi Savannah, I see what you mean about how a long series could seem kind of intimidating - that's why I proposed two stories to work on, a one-shot and a series. I just threw my idea for the series in there too in case someone really, really liked it and wanted to try working on it. Yes, I'm currently going through that hell right now XD. Been looking for an artist since about November 2014. I've tried on DeviantArt before and haven't had much success. I know that most people on here already have comics but I thought maybe it was like InkBlazers where a few people would be interested in making teams.

No offense to Savannah, she means the best, but I wouldn't go for the DA projects page.

Like my film school teacher always says, writers and directors are the only ones that must prove themselves to get work. Artists and such, will always get work.

I'm a writer who spent 6 months looking for an artist to draw a comic of mine, and now I work with over ten wonderful artists to create my many webcomics. I'll share with you some tips.

1. Don't write a story in advance. Many artists will try to explain to you that you must have a script ready to show them. Unless you intend to pay them, then that's nonsense, spoken from someone who would reject you either ways. Never prepare a script beforehand. If you want an artist to feel up for collaboration, then you must draw them in with a story that they feel like they've been a part in creating. Ask them what genre they'd like to do, ask them if they prefer a male or female main character, ask them what character types they like, ask them for all of their prefferences, and then write a story for both of you.
2. Never start with a series. You will most likely not get an artist to say yes to doing a full-on series, since you've seemingly not really worked with any artists before, and a series requires HUGE dedication, and even if you do, there's a large chance they're going to disappear after chapter 1. If you MUST do a series, write chapter one with a closed off ending, so that you can display it as a oneshot, should the artist not want to continue it. Every great writer has started with short films, oneshot comics, and short stories of all sorts. Use these to learn and get all your ideas out, and then look at your ideas and decide which series you want to make.
3. Commission your first oneshot. Good artists are usually careful with who they work with. There are a lot of writers who cause loads of trouble, and chances are, the more skilled the artist is, the more time they've spent online, and the more bad collaboration experiences they've had. If you show you've worked with an artist before, on a succesful and finished project, it will make the artists more likely to give you a chance.
4. Don't make forum threads. Skilled artists don't go around looking for writers to collaborate with. Especially not on a webcomic site. The artists here are here because they're already making stories of their own. You need to go to the places where they aren't. Try to message artists on deviantart, or befriend some on Facebook. Go where artists don't go to post webcomics, and try to speak to some of them.
5. Be understanding and respectful. Not all artists are likely to want to work with you, and that's fine. If an artist does not want to collaborate with you, simply thank them for their time, and try to make your offer to someone else. If you are respectful, and make a good impression, they'll remember you in the future, at a time where they might be more open towards making manga.

Thanks for the great tips. I get what you're saying about not writing a story in advance and starting one from scratch so that the artists can also have a say in it. I'm doing something similar to that with a team of writers and artists to make a bunch of one-shots. But these particular stories are my personal projects that I'd like to get converted into a comic/manga and the only way to do that is for me to either learn how to draw or work with an artist, and I've decided to go with the latter option.
