I'm making a lot of topics here tonight. Forgive me for that.

So the point of this topic is for writers (hobbyist or other wise) to brainstorm through their work. It doesn't have to be cohesive. It could just be notes that you want to share, questions that you want to ask to help you over a hurdle, a blurb from a chapter or one shot that you're currently working on, and more.

Keep the language to a minimum, of course, and this is a safe, creative space. If you're going to directly quote someone, please play nice. You don't have to be super upbeat and encouraging, but don't outright be rude.

Right now it's 1:56AM for me (as I'm writing this), and I'm pecking my way through the next chapter of Mortal Machines. I'm not struggling, but I'm honestly not very focused. Between Critical Role and my mind scrambling all over the place, I can't get anything done. I have a few key scenes lying in wait though. Those will be far, far in the future. They're not major, and in the final product, they might end up being insignificant, but they're going to be interesting to flesh out finally.

Funnily, I don't like to write out of order anymore. Back in the day, I used to write scenes as they came to me. It was also a lot of fun, but sometimes, I would get 100 pages ahead of where I was, and the section I actually needed to write was only like a couple of words in, hahaha.

These days, if I can't nail the beginning of a piece (or if I can't think of a major key scene to work up to (usually both)), then it makes it really, really difficult for me to write something cohesive moving forward.

Chapter two is coming along pretty okay though. Starting off with a bit of reminiscing, not too bad, not too bad. What's funny is that this is my second original story/novel with romance in it. Romance isn't even my wheelhouse. How bizarre.

Great topic! Right now, it's 1:13 am here, and I'm working on one of my stories.

I'm trying to write a romantic scene between two of my characters, and I have to jump in both of their heads. Haha, it sounds so strange writing that, but it's the truth.

For me, I love writing romance, but sometimes it can be hard. I don't want my romance to be cheesy or feel forced, so I try to write slow-burning romances that seem realistic.

I also like to write action scenes. Maybe I'll share some of my work on this forum =)

Slow burning romances definitely is a definitely realistic way to go. Ultimately, it comes down to the organic way your characters react. Even if the reaction is embarrassing or explosive or nervousā€”even if you as a writer are in disbeliefā€”I say keep the interactions as true to the characters as possible.

Sometimes reading the interactions out loud helps in that as well. It can help you decide whether or not you should change something up.

Also, look forward to seeing some pieces of your work!

Thanks! I totally agree with you

I really try to get into my characters' heads and figure out what their thinking from scene to scene.

I love reading my work out loud, as it also helps me to see if the dialogue sounds cheesy or not.

Currently 8:05 PM here, on my last break for my pre-close shift at Starbucks, and working away on the comic scripts for Time Gate: Reaper.

I'm working on the comic scripts because I need those finalized before I can confidently continue the novel version, which I'm hoping to have done by the end of the summer.

I don't think I'm gonna get it done on time :<

Just do your best and good luck. Scripting can be difficult, but hopefully, you find the focus to power through before summer's end (which I usually count as the end of August).

My turn! Its currently 4:27pm and Im rewriting all of the chapters I already put up because I was_(still am)_ very unsatisfied with the way they were written. I felt as if I didnt put enough description and emotion. But I have to stop doing that and realize that Im doing this for fun, not for work and its okay to mess up.

It's absolutely okay to mess up. Like I said earlier, definitely read the work out loud to yourself. I would even say to act it out a little bit, haha. Get into the minds of your characters and just get lost in their interactions. You never know how that could change your writing, even in the most remote ways.

Also, it's 18:41 (6:41PM), and I'm having one difficult time getting this part of the project done. Oof.

Lmao I tried that but it was too weird to act it out XD However, reading your work out loud is a great

Hey again!

Right now I'm working on finalizing a scene in my story between two characters. It's the two main love interest in the story, so I want the scene to be as natural and realistic as possible =)

I thought I'd post in here again o(怃ļ¼¾ā–½ļ¼¾ć€ƒ)o

Currently working on possibly three upcoming chapters and I really like the small bits of...foreshadowing and then I realized that I had written ch. 1 and 2 already and that the parts im working on are improv because I wanted the two mc's relationship to be closer than what I originally wrote

Also the A/C broke and its 111F here (ā•Æ ļ½„ į—œ ļ½„ )ā•Æļøµ ā”»ā”ā”»

I have this idea for the song Shh by Frou Frou. I kind of want to turn it into a short story. The idea involves a mother talking with a child, who is really an adult who has regressed in their mind and is reliving some moment of the past. Some kind of spiritual awakening is involved. I'm probably going to write it out and post a teaser of it later, haha.

I think I have a few ideas based around songs throughout this whole album, actually. Maybe I'll work together with someone and create the "Musically Afflicted" series, haha.

joining this post

9:05pm (GMT +8)

Discussing a story with my gf/artist idea and somehow it's going great. though wondering about the plot being a bit similar to an old movie called Danny the Dog could be a possible problem....

This post looks fun. It's 11:21pm now. I'm getting ready to sleep. I did a page today and a page yesterday. I actually wrote my comic up to chapter 6 already so I'll be good in terms of where to comics is headed for a while, but it occurs to me that I should figure how to beef up the romantic subplot. I just got done writing a 100 page novella with lots of romance and it was a good learning experience. I'm going to have to editing some of the notes I wrote going forward.

I learned that "I love you" is the most toxic word in a love story story unless your story has been going on for years and years (and even then it's a dangerous phrase). It's better to leave it out and have the characters interact. If you're going it right the love should be quite obvious.

This is going to sound very stupid but...

I'm planning on doing a short story fanfiction on Persona 5. I got this idea since I knew I needed some practice on my writing and I thought why not.

Its going to focus on the aftermath of the bad ending and I'm basically going to explore the protagonist's thoughts on what transpired. I'm basically going to be attempting to make up characterization/explore a central character throughout the story if that makes sense.

And if I mess up or if it turns out to be horrendous....oh well. I can only learn from it.

Hey!

Congrats on finishing your novella. I agree with you so much about the words "I love you" in romance. I write a lot of fantasy romance and paranormal romance, so I try to avoid those words all together. As you said, you can show the romance between the two characters. I also enjoy writing characters who have a hard time saying those words.

Besides romance, what genre do you write?

There are no stupid writing projects. Every writing project you do is a way to grow and learn. And as you said, if it doesn't turn out well, you still learned from it.

That's how I feel about my old fanfictions anyway.

Well romance is usually just the subplot. The novella I finished was a fantasy story with a main character who wanted revenge for her father's death. Her father died in a territory despute and the clan's leader returned the territory they won directly afterwards. The mc believes her father was allowed to die in vain and with the leader they have now, all her future ambitions are futile.

The comic I'm working on now is a mystery slice of life with paranormal romantic elements. In the past I've written whatever comes to mind. Usually short stories that have a premise with dramatic potential.

Im really into crime dramas but I haven't had much luck with them so far.

Romance is my subplot, too, but I feel it's a subplot many readers enjoy.

Now, this is a wonderful surprise to come back to!

@Inspector_Spinda
"I love you" has become an emotional crutch without fully taking in the full impact of what it means emotionally. A lot of times people will react with a negative reaction. And while that can be true in most cases, it's always written more or less the same way. There's a hesitation, but there's very little emotional pay off aside from making both characters feel bad or awkward at first. If an "I love you" must be done, it has to be done will with varying emotions and interactions. I agree with you though! It can be dangerous and there's a sort of poetry in just letting the characters interact naturally and let it be said through actions.

Good luck with your novella!

@Demy
Hey, hey now, Demy. It's not stupid at all. It's far from "very stupid". This is my more or less serious writing account, but I have an AO3 of my own that I have tonnes of fan fiction on. Fan fiction is a good basis of nailing characterisations, especially in varying settings. It's a "safe" way to take a risk because you rely more on established product rather than trying to build characters of your own from scratch. Just have fun with it, but be as passionate about it! It may be fan work but there's still a lot of work that goes into it.
