So I read this helpful advice once that said you should know exactly how your character will react when put in a box. Which inspired me to come up with this exercise, the Escape the Room Challenge!

If you wanna do it, read the scenario and respond with how your character reacts – most importantly, we want to know if they escape the room or not. And it doesn’t need to be in-depth or be in bullet point form. There aren’t really any rules, I just think it’s a cool way to understand your character better.

Here’s the scenario:

Your character wakes up blindfolded in a small room that looks like this.

There is nothing inside the room except for a mattress. What your character doesn’t know is that there is a secret panel* in the floor that hides the key to the door. The floorboard is slightly darker than the other ones, but the difference is so subtle that your character would need to be up close to see it.

* Note: Your character doesn't need hands to open the secret panel. The panel will respond to any part of your character's body that touches it.

This is what your character can see:

• The room is small and has a low wooden ceiling.

• The walls and floor are made of wood that looks aged.

• The floorboards are about the same width as the average human hand. The wall panels and ceiling tiles are the same width as well.

• There are no cobwebs or spiderwebs in the room. There is no mold, mildew, dust, or algae in the room. It appears to be spotless.

• The door is wooden and has a brass doorknob. The doorknob does not appear to be rusted.

• The door hinges do not appear to be rusted.

• Peering through the slight cracks between the door and the doorframe reveals nothing.

• There are no windows.

• There is a small white mattress big enough for one person. It has a few faded red stains on the surface. It is not ripped or damaged. There is no tag or logo on it.

• The blindfold is white and has no stains on it. It is not ripped or damaged. There is no tag or logo on it.

This is what your character can smell:

• The room smells like air freshener, specifically cinnamon.

• When smelling the walls and floor up close (and ceiling, if your character can reach it), they smell like aged wood.

• The mattress smells a little bit like bleach.

• The blindfold does not smell like anything.

This is what your character can feel:

• The walls and floor (and ceiling) may look aged, but they feel as smooth and solid as concrete. The panels do not creak or move when pushed on. There are no openings to reach into and yank them out.

• The door does not budge when pulled or pushed.

• The doorknob does not feel loose and neither do the door hinges.

• Your character is completely naked. The air surrounding them feels slightly cool.

• The mattress is scratchy and uncomfortable, probably made from some kind of cheap material. There are no springs inside the mattress.

• The blindfold feels like standard cloth.

Your character hears nothing in the room except for any sound that they make (i.e. breathing, moving around, speaking, etc.). Your character tastes nothing either, unless they try to lick or eat something in the room. Assume that everything tastes as it should (i.e. the mattress tastes like a mattress and not like a sugar cookie).

If your character tries to use any magical power, ability, or heightened sense, it does not work. They cannot detect any kind of magical signature or presence, but there is something about this room that represses anything beyond the abilities of an average human.

What does your character do?

Here are two of my characters.

Jodehn does the following:

• When she wakes up, she keeps her eyes closed and focuses on her senses. She notes that she doesn’t feel any injuries and it doesn’t feel like she’s under the influence of anything. She does not feel fatigued and she can still feel her magic as usual. This reassures her.

• She notes that she is completely naked and the air is slightly cool. She notes the position she is in; on her back with hands at her side and legs together. She feels the blindfold tied tightly around her eyes and she feels the scratchy mattress underneath her.

• She hears nothing in the room except her own breathing. She assumes no one is with her, but just to be sure, she tries using her powers to detect anything. She realizes she can’t use them. This concerns her, especially because she can’t sense any magical presence. That not only means her captor knows she’s magical, but they have some kind of magical skill too.

• She shifts and pretends like she’s waking up. There’s no noticeable reaction, so she takes the blindfold off and notes her surroundings.

• She sees the door and suspects it might be a trap. She doesn’t risk trying to use her powers again.

• She looks at the mattress and sees what looks like blood stains. Those somewhat concern her; it might mean she’ll be tortured, but at least being immortal means she won’t die. Unless her captor can suppress her immortality too? It might be possible, but she pushes that thought aside.

• She finds no tag or logo on the mattress. She feels no springs inside either, which is disappointing. She could’ve used those as a weapon. Maybe a shitty weapon, but at least she’d feel armed.

• She smells the mattress and picks up traces of bleach. She smells the air freshener in the room too. Both things confuse her; her captor is powerful enough to suppress her magic, but they use cheap cleaning products and air fresheners? They could’ve easily used magic for that.

• She stands up and looks under the mattress, but finds nothing. Guess she’ll have to test the door. She takes the mattress and flings it towards the door. Nothing happens.

• She approaches the door and tries opening it. It’s locked. She pushes against it with one hand, but can already tell she can’t break this door down. She peers through the cracks between the door and doorframe. Just darkness.

• After assessing her surroundings, she thinks about her captor’s motive. Why put her in a room with a locked door and a mattress? Why bother blindfolding her? Why take her clothes? And why bother with the bleach and air freshener?

• She thinks her captor might be toying with her; perhaps they want her to find a way of escaping, or at least make her believe she can escape. The latter doesn’t give her much hope, so she chooses to believe the former.

• She tries to put herself in her captor’s position. What would she do? There’s nothing obvious in the room that could unlock the door or knock it down. That’d be too easy. But maybe there’s something hidden in the room.

• She knows she can’t yank the panels out. The walls and floor seem pretty solid, so trying to break them wouldn’t work. But her captor clearly has some magical prowess; maybe there’s a magical panel or switch somewhere?

• She stands by the door and surveys the room. Nothing unusual stands out, which means feeling around until something hopefully happens. She figures she’ll start with the floor because there’s less space to cover.

• As she’s crawling on the floor feeling around, she notices that one of the floorboards is slightly darker than the others. She waves her non-dominant hand over it (she won’t risk losing her dominant hand if it’s a trap) and when nothing happens, she touches the floorboard with the same hand. She crawls towards the opposite end of the room as she slides her hand across the floorboard. Finally, as she gets near the other side of the room (away from the mattress), the floorboard opens from under her hand and reveals a key.

• She waves her hand over the key and, when nothing happens, takes it in her dominant hand. The floorboard closes when she does.

• She stands up and waits for a moment, wondering if anything will happen. When nothing does, she easily unlocks the door and cautiously opens it.

• Jodehn escapes the room.

Donajee does the following:

• When she wakes up, she opens her eyes and realizes two things: she’s blindfolded and she’s completely naked. “…What the fuck?”

• She sits up and rips off the blindfold. She looks around the room and takes in what she sees: it’s a small room, everything’s wooden, there’s one door and no windows, and she’s sitting on a mattress. A really scratchy one too. What kind of captor bothers with a mattress if it isn’t even comfortable?

• She stands up and looks at the mattress. There are blood stains on it, but…she doesn’t feel any injuries, so probably not hers. Except, deities have faster regeneration, so maybe it is hers and she just healed already. Whatever. Either way, the shitstain who put her here is gonna pay.

• She goes over to the door and tries opening it. Locked. She bangs on the door and shouts. “Hey! I don’t know whatever it is you’re planning, but you better let me out if you wanna live!! And give me my damn clothes back!!”

• There’s no answer. She tries slamming against the door a few times, but it won’t budge, and her side’s starting to hurt. She looks at the mattress.

• After ripping the mattress open, she finds out there’s no springs in it. Damnit. She could have tried picking the lock.

• She throws the mattress at the door in anger. “Let me out, you sick fucks!!!”

• After more screaming and threatening, she realizes that either no one can hear her or no one cares. Hell, they’re probably laughing at her throwing a fit. That just pisses her off even more.

• Wait. If there were people nearby – or anything that can feel anger, really – she could try using her powers. If she consciously focuses on it, she can connect with her Projection and find out where she is.

• She closes her eyes and tries to focus. Nothing happens. It doesn’t feel like anything’s stopping her from Projecting, but it’s stopping her from connecting with any of her Projections. “You’re fucking shitting me…”

• She remembers something Omdarfeh taught her: “You must relax. Breathe. You are the deity of Rage. You do not let anger control you; you control it.” She takes a few deep breaths.

• She tries thinking about what she’s already tried. Breaking down the door won’t work and neither will any insults or threats. Hmm…she could try smashing the door open. She tries channeling energy into her fist, but nothing happens. Oh, great. Doesn’t any magic work in here?

• She doesn’t detect any magical signature or presence, which means she’s dealing with someone or something powerful. And they’ve done their research. Donajee realizes she won’t be able to get out of this with physical force.

• She huffs and slumps against the wall. What kind of disturbed fuckwit would want to leave her naked in a room with no means of escape? It’s messed up. Only someone like Tohdee would pull this shit.

• She remembers something Tohdee told her: “Donajee, you don’t understand. There’s no fun in just giving them what they want! Let them fight over it, that’s much more entertaining.”

• Hmm…that gives her an idea. Maybe there really isn’t a way of escaping, but maybe there is and she has to find it. She definitely wasn’t going to sit around and waste away, so she had to at least try.

• There was nothing else in the room except for the mattress, which didn’t have shit. So…maybe it was a part of the room? There could be some kind of magical switch or panel somewhere. Or maybe a camera. That creeped her out immensely, but at least she wouldn’t feel so…alone. It was better to know people were watching than to think there was absolutely no one and she was just stuck here by herself.

• She presses her hand against the wall, noticing how it fits the panel almost perfectly. Nothing happens. She tries multiple spots where she can reach, but still nothing. Ugh…this was going to take forever.

• She eventually gives up on the walls and looks at the floor. Squatting would take too long…fuck, she was going to have to crawl, wasn’t she? Fucking degrading.

• After crawling around and trying multiple spots, she gets to the far end of the room opposite the mattress. Finally, a space opens from under her hand and a key is revealed. “Yes!!” She snatches the key and makes for the door.

• Shoving the key in the lock, she opens it easily and slams the door open. “Fuck yeah!

• Donajee escapes the room.

This SOUNDS LIKE FUN !! i'll do just one, because this sounds like a situation she would be in anyway.

Leona wakes up in blind folded and quickly takes off the blind fold to look around the room. she notices she's naked but there appears to be no surveillance. Leona's first move would be to try the door. Although obvious she wouldn't be there if it wasn't locked she tries it anyway. the handle doesn't jiggle and she has nothing to remove the hinges with. so she rams it rams it again and again kicks pummels the door. (should this work because she's not a human she's alien with bones like solid rock) she destroys the wooden door and flees killing whoever is behind this, but where is the fun in that. should this not work she would start feel the boards around to see if she is underground or to see is she has hollow point by knock she knocks on the ceiling panels first, then the wall the floor. till she reaches the panel with the key she goes to the door to attempt to open it but the she's damaged lock from pummeling the door. angrily she discards the key. she looks in the panel that moved where the key was, she touches it again noticing it moves in some way slides to the side or within the wall and responds to touch. she pulls up the floor board to see where the mechanism since to her it makes sense to be heat sensitive. which tells her there is electricity she looks up. light is coming from somewhere to let her see around. she dismantles what she can from the mechanism in the floor, this take hers some time to pull out what she needs from the lights the moving floor board. she constructs from the wires and power to the room. a make shift electrical torch the wires aren't nearly as hot as she wants them be but just enough to make the metal soft. the lights flicker and the hinges become lose she kicks the door in one more time it falls flat. she heads off to kill her captor. she escapes the room.

This sounds like fun! So I will be using my character Kima.

  • Kima wakes up tired and confused. As soon as he snaps to his senses he realizes he's naked and blindfolded. Here he begins to cry at the thought of being kidnapped and naked.

  • He takes off the blindfold and looks around the room. He notices there are no windows and feels uneasy. There was nothing but silence. He notices the mattress, but when he went to sit he noticed the blood. Disgusted he backed away from it and huddled in the corner near the door.

  • He tries to open the door, but it's locked. He then begins to try and break it down, but his weak noodle arms are useless. He then gets tired and lays on the bed forgetting the blood. He then jumps of the bed remembering how disgusting it is. He got tired of standing naked so he tore apart the mattress and made makeshift clothes. He regrets it later because it's scratchy, but better than being naked.

  • After that he did the one thing he was ever good at, giving up. An hour passed as he just walked around a bit and huddled in a corner a bunch of times. He began jumping on each floorboard and making a boop* sound as if he was playing on a huge keyboard.

  • When he jumped on the last floor board a panel opened up revealing the key. He picked it up and stared at it. Tears began to develop as he was happy. He was going to go home. He opens the door and jumps outside ecstatically.

  • There his friends Slappy and Jeorge hit him in the face with a cake and told him, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Kima had forgotten his birthday. He spent his morning trapped in a room afraid he was kidnapped and possibly worse. He fought his friends for the worst birthday surprise ever.

I'll come back to this later and make something up.

Interesting! I never even considered the location of the room being relevant; Leona has a sharp mind.

This made me snort while I was trying to drink water, thanks. xDD I don't know much about her, but I like Leona already.

Honestly, I feel like this would be a normal reaction to have and it makes me like Kima more. Poor guy though. :joy:

LMAO THIS IS PERFECT

This is so cute oh my god

I'm glad for the happy ending! Kima is so precious.

She's a beast ! if you wanna see her craziness in action check out Los Esmeraldas it's on hiatus till I finish this more recent issue. but she's ruthless. lol

This sounds fun!, I will do it for the four characters in my cover:

Rocky: (the rock in the middle): it won`t do anything(because is a rock), but some random lucky event will destroy the building with the rock(and blindfold) intact. Everyone around it will congratulate Rocky

Kimura: (the guy in red), for the first couple of minutes he will search the exit, but after he hits his head with a wall he will get angry and use his fire powers. Then he will realize that now he is in a worse situation than before because now he is in a burning room. After the room and building collapses over him, he finds the secret exit.

Jenny: (The girl): She takes off the blindfold and realizes she is naked. She uses the mattress to make improvised clothes. She removes the plank for the secret passage and uses it to try and open the door. After some trial and error she will fall in the secret panel and reach the exit.

The shang pu master:(the ninja behind the rock): He escapes offscreen and in an anticlimactic way. And his only explanation about how he did it is saying in a stoic tone: "because i`m a ninja".

I haven't made a comic. I'm doing a lot of practice before I even get into that so I'll just make up a character as I go. Guess this is also practice.

Criticism is welcome.

Note: I "bended" the rule a bit. You'll see what I mean in a bit.

You feel cold and you can't see.

Curling up into a ball should help. Try doing that. Oh wait you can't hear me.

You smell the room and notice that it smells rather nice. Though you don't let that fool you. You get the distinct sense that you might be in danger. One of the few interesting trains of thought I've ever seen you have.

Oh, you're wondering where your clothes are? I guess that's important too (but what do I know, I've been naked since the beginning of time, you humans are sensitive)

Powers beyond my control want you to figure out how to get out of this room. Said something about "practice" and "research", whatever that means.

I suggest you get out soon, but its not like you can hear me or anything. I'm just some guy following a nobody.

But enough about me! How are you-

"Help!" You yell. "Someone get me out of here!" Gosh, I thought the protagonist was supposed to have more balls. Well, I guess its okay to be the underdog in this situation. Everyone loves the underdog.

You continue yelling for an hour. And the next hour. Then you slept on top of a mattress covered in dirt (at least I hope its dirt), then you yelled some more.

You really are nothing special my goodness. I watch over you day and night, patiently waiting for something interesting to happen. But nothing ever happens. Its the same shit, over and over and over and over again.

So when I saw that he was getting snatched out of his room for some silly experiment, I couldn't help but feel giddy. It was the most excited I've been in months.

Too bad it was a freaking disappointment.

Instead I'm watching you cry like a bitch. The protagonist is supposed to, you know, move the plot forward. Sure you can cry but people don't want to see that nonsense for hours on end. Screw this, I'm out.

As I try to phase out, I promptly faceplant myself on the wall. Pretty hard too. What the heck just happened?

Okay calm down, on the bright side I feel no pain. So me having tons of splinters on my face doesn't really bother me. I've been through worse. But on the other hand, this means I'm trapped along with this loser.

Shit. What am I gonna do? I take a look around and prepare to spend the rest of eternity here, wait why are you looking at me like that?

"....I-is someone else there?" Nobody else is here idiot. Are you getting delusions now?

No, no. He's never had any delusions. He's too normal and sane for that. Wait....could he have heard me? I can't really speak like he can though. Hmmm.

I smack the wall as hard as I can and he jerks his head. Unbelievable. If I knew this earlier I would have abused it to my heart's content. Maybe make him paranoid so that he can actually do something interesting with his life (assuming he doesn't kill himself of course). Its pretty stupid that I didn't figure this out earlier.

But the past is the past I guess. Maybe I can use this to get us out of here. I guess I'm the protagonist now. Cheaters never win my ass.

I observe the room for you since you're basically useless with that blindfold on. How did that person expect you to get out of this?

Also that part of the floor seems particularly dirty. I'm no clean freak but goodness that looks disgusting. I rub it to try to get the dirt off, as if that would make any difference to this mess of a room and....it opened....

"What was that?!" You yell while frantically running around.

A key? I slam my fist as hard as I could to direct him to the key. And it took you and hour to get to the general area.

And another hour to grab the key....

And another hour to put it on the keyhole...

And another hour to get out of the room....

That was surprisingly tedious, but you did it! Well technically, I did it. But think of this is a group project, you could put no effort and succeed because of someone else.

Wait, I'm basically implying that I did all of the work. I guess that's what I'm here for, to get people like you out of sticky situations.

You're free to go. Guess those weirdoes wanted nothing to do with you after that. Why would they kidnap you and not even bother you afterwards? That's odd.

But great stories aren't supposed to realistically get into the nitty-gritty details. That's what the mediocre sequels and fanfiction are for.

Though....you might have to ask someone to take that blindfold off for you. Its not like your blind or anything.

You're not blind right?
........right?

Alright, I'm done. I definitely cheated but this was a decent exercise. Did the humor work? Were the characters decent?

Any criticism is helpful.

Not sure how much criticism I could offer on this; it's not really my type of humor. xD The narrator is too much of an asshole for me and I feel like the protagonist is unreasonably incompetent -- like the emotional reactions are normal, but taking an hour to get out of the room after putting the key in the keyhole? Even if they were blind (which isn't a detriment for everyone), they'd easily be able to exit, which makes me think that the writer just wanted the protagonist to look really pathetic for no good reason.

But it was an interesting twist! I'd definitely read a comic with the protagonist, maybe one exploring their relationship to the narrator. They remind me of my own protagonist, though maybe a bit more...extreme when it comes to not knowing what to do.

This fits perfectly with what I've seen in your comic. A lot of humor and a lot of breaking the reader's expectations...and reality. xD

Oh gosh this was a lot of fun to be honest as it was interesting to see what they'd do lol.

Dee

  • They'd probably be hung over to start with and realize they got taken somewhere. They'd try to get up, stumble over, perhaps where the floorboard is at and just fall over, touching it. At first it seems like they'd be able to get out, however, that being said, with them being hung over, they wouldn't notice the floorboard had actually moved once they sat up. They'd probably fall back asleep for a while till they were less hungover.

  • At which point, they'd wake up, and try to communicate with anyone on their team, but probably not get very far depending on if there was some type of scrambler or if they were in a world where there was no signal to main base. If that faile, they'd go over to the door, and after trying to open the door, realize it's locked.

  • I'd like to think that they'd notice the floorboard, but knowing them, they'd probably wind up trying to break down the door. They'd do this for a while, before eventually coming to the conclusion that they actually can't break anything down. At which point they'd look around the room and then notice the floorboard. They'd look in there to see the key and use that to get out.

Quicksilver:

  • Quicksliver wouldn't be hung over, however depending on how he got taken, he'd assess himself to see if he's hurt or anything. He'd probably roll off the bed and sit on the floor. He'd take stock and see if there's any hidden cameras or anything like that and just tap on the floor a few times to see if there's a way to escape from there. He'd also try to see if his communicator worked, and if not, then he'd walk to the door and try to open it. IF it didn't open, he'd also try to ram open the door using his strength. If that failed, he'd probably wind up taking out his blaster and shooting a couple shots at the door.

  • After realizing that would fail, at that point, he'd try going around to different panels on the walls and touching them. He'd get his fingers between grooves to try and pry them off. After realizing there's nothing there on the walls, he'd look under the mattress for the key. He'd probably then sit down on the mattress, and take another look around the room to figure out what he's missing and then come to the conclusion to check the floors.

  • He'd go to each corner of the floorboards, trying to pry his fingers under them and finally get the right one where it releases and he finds the key. At which point, he's then able to escape.

Yeah i wrote this like basically on the spot. Didn't really think either of these characters through at all (or much of what happened really). I had no real reason to make the character look pathetic, i just kind of tried to do it.

I was trying to find a balance to make the narrator likable while making him sort of a jerk.

Also, yeah the part with the protagonist being blind was pretty silly. Definitely could have done that better.

Thanks for the criticism though, i think it could help me later on.
