Writing is more important than Art

Writing certainly is very important. But if you're working with a visual medium, the visuals, too, are important and shouldn't be underestimated.

Comics is a medium that both needs art and good writing. But basing on the example above, One's One Punch Man can't stand on its own just by dialogues and story. It needed the comedic pause, facial reaction and superb paneling to achieve it's overall tone. If you ever want to improve or learn about art, i think this website will help.

This is a false dichotomy! Both are vital!

I think story telling is a form of art.. I would guess that in this case you're specifically referring to comics, and I suppose one could say a good story will save mediocre art, but.. It's kind of a bad argument! Because if the best thing about your comic is the story, you should probably write a book or a script instead! And if the best thing about your comic is its art, maybe you need to team up with a writer! But also, sometimes you just need to do your thing and the writing/art will get better!

Is breathing more important than happiness? Ideally I'd like as much of both as I can have for as long as possible! Thanks!

Ultimately, it depends on the story as a whole. It depends how the art and writing work together, as a partner. It's also a matter of preference.

It's a hard one to answer, like what came first, the chicken or the egg?

im really confused because that comic clearly has bad art and writing on purpose.

anyway, i think the writing/art debate is heavily influenced by situation. largely, in web comics, the art matters a lot more because of attention spans and all that - the chances i give a comic drop severely if the art is uncomfortable to look at, and skyrocket if i like the art. then again, i do follow a few comics where the writing trumped the art, so good writing can still save you. and if its BL the answer is neither art nor writing are important bc its BL and therefor unfairly favoured by creepy straight girls.

on the other hand, in print comics, ive read some comics with awful art - runaways and ultimate spiderman come to mind. the former had great writing, which made up for it, and the former was actually shit until about a volume before miles took over, but it was spiderman so it was successful.

theres also some comics with brilliant (or very fan-servicy) art that is so. badly. written. but people are happy to read them for artist loyalty, or just because theyre nice to look at.

tl;dr: while which will make you successful varies, and sometimes both can be bad and youll still be successful, on principle its important to keep both balanced and high quality

I mean, if that was the intent I would think a proper proof would have really good writing? Like, you could take a fantastic, effective page and show how much it's reduced by amateurish art, to show that the writing doesn't hold up without the art supporting it. And I've seen examples of that, when a webcomic gets a new artist and it suddenly becomes REALLY clear just how much of a difference a skilled artist under the same writer makes.

But I mean. I also grew up on sprite comics, XKCD exists, Homestuck's popularity defined a generation of fandom, OPM is cool -- we're surrounded by examples of good or clever writing working with unskilled or limited art.

This is where I feel like the distinction between "writing" and "art" gets hard to make. Are comedic pauses an art thing? I'd put them down as a writing thing -- a silent beat is absolutely a writing choice, even though sometimes it's one the artist makes. Is panelling the realm of art or of writing? That.... can kinda go either way, since it's both pacing (writing) and composition (art). Writing is more than just the dialogue and story!

And in that sense, the question of whether Art or Writing is more important is one of those impossible distinctions, like Plot vs. Characters -- they're two sides of the same structure, and they must support each other.

Nah you are correct But i Do Believe that there should be some Effort shown in the Artwork, That way the readers can Really feel what you Are trying to convey is Meaningful.....No Matter how good or bad the Art is Just put your all into it and "I personally Believe it will take if its real" But again The writing is at Least 90 percent of the story, hence why Literature exists in the first place in All different formats..... anyway I'm rambling now sorry.

Art brings people in and the writing makes them stay. You could have an incredibly well written comic, but if your art is bad not many will stay for the story. Same goes for good art/ bad writing, came for the art left for the writing. Art and writing have to go hand in hand, you gotta find a balance of both!

i think its a good combo between both of them. the writing says the pause should be there but the artsy part actually puts it there and makes it work or not dependin on panel size/what the characters doing in it. like with that one punch man pic it wouldnt be as funny if it was some deathnote style drawing. ya gotta know what yer doing from both sides to pull that off i think
