I was watching some YouTube videos the other day one cereals and candy they just won't make anymore, and it really dawned on me how much junk food there was on the market... but I was a kid during that time and while sometimes my mom did buy the stuff, she monitored how much we ate. And she was VERY big on water, fruit and not eating after dinner. In other words, I get why they got discontinued. People wanted to eat healthier, but was ending production really the solution?
As a woman now, I still carried over the healthy eating habits and while I am overweight now (from all the vacationing and cooking from being a newlywed), I'm not fat. Even my doctor says so. However, society around us has gotten fatter and these cereals and candies don't exist anymore. So I would say that discontinuing our kiddie cereals and treats didn't solve anything. All they did was take something fun to eat away. People who have eating disorders will just find other junk food to eat.
So what are we supposed to do? Take away the rest of junk food? No. And I'm really sick of the junk food police mentality. People's eating habits are their own responsibility and when you start enforcing healthy eating like it's law, you're actually discouraging people not encouraging them. And this is coming from someone who eats fish, green vegetables and fruit because she LIKES EATING THEM!
Instead of taking up the mentality that if one group can't control themselves, no one can have this treat anymore, let's do what a lot of parents did in my generation: monitor how much your kids intake and teach them to balance. Believe me, it will stick with them and no more delicious sweets will get punished for someone else's mistake.
For the record, my missed cereals which I would love back for my kids to love are the Butterfinger BBs, Count Chocula cereal and Berry Berry Kix.
