Being a storyteller isn’t easy, as anyone who tried it can attest. Crafting a world or story can feel overwhelming, no matter what’s the project about. It can be a TTRPG campaign, a movie script, or a novel, it will require a lot of hard work and learning.
So, here are two things you can do to improve your writing, with a way to check out three more at the end.
Enjoy New Experiences
Everyone who starts their writing journey comes across the old advice: You can only write what you know. That’s very true, which is why research is essential for anything you want to include in your story. But a great way to strengthen your research?
Live it.
Try something new. Step into an unfamiliar space. Pick up a hobby you never imagined yourself doing. Go somewhere you’d normally avoid. For me, that meant going to a club or taking a pottery class—both of which actually happened, by the way.
Another example comes from my webnovel, The Ascendant’s Path. My protagonist is a trained soldier, so I decided to go hands-on with my research. I visited a firing range to shoot real guns and played airsoft to get a feel for military tactics in action.
Sound Body

If you think storytelling is all about the mind, you’re only half right. Sure, crafting stories relies on words and knowledge, but those come from your brain—and your brain depends on your body to function at its best.
That means the stronger and healthier your body, the better your mind will perform. A good sleep routine, balanced diet, and solid hygiene habits go a long way in keeping your mind sharp and refreshed. And the best part? It’s never too late to start.
If you’re new to exercise, start small. Even a ten-minute walk makes a difference. Gradually build from there—take longer walks, try a sport, or even practice a martial art (which also ties into the fifth suggestion—more on that later).
The key is to start and gradually increase your efforts each day. It will be hard at first, but don’t focus on the immediate struggle—think of the reward at the end of the yellow-brick road.
