I'm a screenwriter first and foremost and the common saying is your first screenplay is going to be pretty bad. It's just how it is being new to a medium, likely super excited about your idea, naive a bit, not even knowing what you don't know yet, etc.

Why do folks dislike present-tense writing?

I write screenplays first and foremost and they always must be written present tense(action & description writing at least) Same reason it would be ideal for a comic, it's a visual story happening in real-time to the viewer/reader engaging in it.
