The way I used to draw muscles back then vs now! Back then, the most I would do for a muscular character is add a hatching line to define the biceps and triceps and that was it! Kinda similar to how Dragon Ball and most older manga with cartoony art styles did theirs

In 2021, I took an anatomy course at my community college the result of that was an increased knowledge of anatomy to drew better, and a discovery that drawing muscles was fun! Initially I would still keep them simple, especially for the comic but eventually I started drawing the muscles detailed during the sketching process. And now, I'm at the point where muscle detail is no longer implied or suggested, its fully rendered and right there in center! Pectorals, Biceps, Deltoids and even obliques are full detailed now!

I feel like the one character that's been impacted the most by this change is Scamp. I should make it clear that he's always been a little muscle head, but in early 2022, I began drawing his pecs more defined which I don't really do consistently since it depends on the mood of the scenes. And that same logic goes for how I draw muscles in general; if its a more intense scene, I'll go all out with the muscle detail to make it more epic. And if its a light hearted scene, I'll dial it back a substantial amount. I honestly don't know if I can go back to the way I had drawn them initially but I personally like how I do it now. Is it realistic for a dog or cat character to have muscles so defined it pops through their fur? No but does it look cool? Yes!!! Also, there are certain characters that are muscular but hold back on the muscle detail like Julia. But that's more of a personal preference than anything
