Accidental plagiarizing

Just curious, how many of you have ever come up with an idea that you think is really original and cool only to realize that it's already been done and it's from a movie/series you watched like 5 years ago and totally forgot about it.

An idea I had that involved people who make pacts with demons from the book of Solomon was going to be a series in which people make an offering to the demon they seeked power from and they would receive the powers from them...

Then I later would discover Jojo's Bizzarre Adventure...

I once came up with a character who I thought was totally original, only to have someone point out at me that he had the exact same backstory, beat for beat, as Mr. Terrific.

I have never once read a comic with Mr. Terrific in it, and I had only seen his Wiki once several years before and had completely forgotten about it. It's been kind of terrifying ever since. It makes me wonder if any of my other original ideas are really ripoffs and I don't realize it.

This happened to my first ever series I made in 2017, but dropped it because I didn't plan anything and the story wasn't that good anyway. My idea was almost the same as a book called "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline, I've never read that book, but a friend who read it told me about it, after I was thinking about bringing that series back lol

That's also pretty much Magi/Magi: Adventure of Sinbad so don't fret!
It's still a good premise.
Since the story of Solomon is pretty damn old, there are bound to be stories based around it.

I was aiming more towards Stands/demons doing the hand to hand combat being too similar.

and some of the over the top powers characters would have.

But yeah, if the combat system and tone was too similar it could be seen as an "imitation".

Maybe adding a personal touch and some differences. Maybe they trade favors with the demons (ex: "i will kill that guy you dislike but in exchange, bring me an ancient chalice i want") or perhaps they fuse with their demon during combat.

maybe in the future, I already have two that need my attention right now, plus that story never really had a proper base made for it other than some character/demon designs and a very weak plot set-up.

I make a story draft about a girl that accidentally killed her step mom (or supposedly lover I kinda forgotten) that's encouraged by her friend (kinda), but the whole story is basically just her mind playing with her, and after some times I learned that everything is basically the 'uninvited

I had this germ of a story about three or four friends. One of them saw himself from the future in his washing machine, like a time window, telling him that something they did when they were kids broke the future (or another universe, I can't remember). So the story would change between when they were kids and did something that changed everything, the present where they're young adults struggling with life and the future (or various futures, more likely) where it's more of a sci fi action adventure, in a ruined world.

I had read 20th Century Boys three months before. Twice.

I tried to keep changing a little bit of the concept, but it was so heavily inspired I just dropped it (though now that I'm remembering it, I'm kinda tempted to give it another go)

In high school I was writing a "novel" in my take on the popular YA tropes of the time when I felt that the ending of Divergent's sequel, Insurgent, was too close to what I was writing. It bummed me out. But what made me angry was that the author abandoned the story thread revealed at the end of book 2 for a totally different story thread in book 3!!! Hey, if you're going to use a great idea, at least use it!

Lol ok seriously, I'm not condoning that. That should go without saying.

But I am for reals working on a comic that intentionally borrows some superficial elements from Mary Poppins (a sorta magical British nanny, a work-obsessed parent, two kids... s'bout it). Except my story will be even gayer, so come at me, Disney!!!!

Lol this has never happened to me all my ideas are extremely unique!

Just kidding one time in middle school I ripped off the Last Airbender so I could write my stuffed animals into the plot

When i was a small kid, the influences of my comics were extremely obvious....My brothers used to say things like: "that crocodile reminds me of goku"

chapter 1 of my comic plays out almost the exact same way as issue 1 of more than meets the eye, i'd just finished catching up with it when i started working on spire.

i also have an urban fantasy novel in the works that might be a little too close in concept to the show ghosted.

In my present comic, various characters has their blood with peculiar characteristic (explosive, curative, fire, ice, etc) and some of them ar a kind of vigilante/superheroe.

Then, I read Boku no Hero Academia, where everybody is a heroe and one of them has explosive sweat and I'm like "welp, at least is not so similar"
