I am going to a bookstore today, but I don’t know what other comics or books to buy to read for enjoyment and annotating for entertainment. I would like 5 - 10 books and comics for reading for enjoyment and for interesting stuff. I’m also working on my own comic as well.

I would also like to learn or get advice on, how to read and reread books over and over again, as well as remaining interested toward commitment to reading these books or comics. I used to like reading books, but I have stopped rereading them for some reason. Because I thought it was not easy for me to maintain interest or understanding what I would like in my stories (likes and dislikes in each part of a single book). Because if something looks off in my book I lose interest, close it, and do something else. Is it normal for this to happen? And how do I stay committed to reading and rereading books without wasting them?

On the other hand, I do know what I would like to read. The books I usually like are fantasy and adventure books, not too much gory, usually safe for work and also occasional dark, but not so dark that it’s like a horror movie, cute stuff, and books with a certain moral or theme in each chapter or book itself. These stories are also usually short and done in one book. Also, up to two or three book series should work too, but I still prefer more of standalone books or short story anthology. The books I usually like as a grasp are the “Hotel Strange” English comic book series, by Katherine Ferrier and Florian Ferrier (Hôtel Étrange in French) , “Cucumber Quest” by Gigi D.G, “The Mrs. Piggle Wiggle Treasury” by Betty MacDonald and illustrated by Hilary Knight, the “Pippi Longstocking” books, Enid Blyton short story books, “Lucid Memories” in tapas, and “the little trashmaid” in tapas.

Last but not least, do you have any book/comic recommendations on how to write comic stories and standalone stories? Basically just 3 - 4 book recommendations for books on how to write comic stories.

Here is my linktree if something strikes your fantasy. A lot of my work is pretty accessible for everyone. The Museum is technically an anthology series.

In regard to your question about standalone stories - think "small". A lot of newer writers tend to get ahead of themselves because they sit down to write with lofty ideas of a fifteen book epic fantasy series. If you use outlines, find an outline that fits the type of story you want to write. Those outlines are generally good for 25-30 chapters for one book.

perennial recommendation for Understanding Comics and Making Comics by Scott McCloud! They're great.

You might enjoy Diana Wynne Jone's childrens/YA novels; they tend to be standalone or short series. She also wrote short stories; I remember enjoying Unexpected Magic when I read it 15+ years ago.

You could try the “The Keys to the Kingdom” series by Garth Nix. It’s fantasy YA so there is nothing too gory.

If you want something similar to Pippi or Ms. Piggle Wiggle, I recommend the Moomin series by Tove Jansson. There are also comics.

Thank you so much for the recommendations guys! I got the books (but not all books that were recommended were found in that bookstore, but I found some books and comics in that store), and your suggestions really helped me find what books to choose. Hopefully, I will practice reading my books for enjoyment somehow.

Here’s are some of the following books I got:
- a moomin chapter book, “Commet in Moominland” by Tove jansson
- a book called “Rip the Page! : Adventures in creative writing” by Karen Benke
- the classic book called “Pinnochio” by Carlo collodi and it’s puffin book, which is the one with the happier ending where he is human In the end (not the sad ending).
- a how to make comics book called “Maker Comics: Draw a comic!” By J.P. Coovert (obviously has 2 scott mccloud books as a recommended read at the end as well as other books and an online reading source)
- a graphic novel book called “Manu!!” By Kelly Fernandez
- a chapter book called “Mr. Stink” by David Walliams
- And book #1 of the “princess in black” series by Shannon Dale and Dean Dale.

What do you think?
