Anyone draw more than they were planning?

Has anyone sketched a comic page before, and then when they actually make it, they draw a LOT more than they actually planned?

I was drawing my most recent strip for 25 & Single and the last panel was never supposed to happen... and when it did, I REALLY went overboard. I spent the most time on that panel!

Would love to see other people's comic pages that turned out to be a lot more detailed than they had anticipated. XD

This is kinda a long story but originally I planned a specific scene from my comic All Broken Gods to take place in a regular city street. I had a few dreams about cities overgrown with plants while working on the early draft and thought of adding the dream atmosphere to the world to spice it up since it's a fantasy story. Rewrote a few things and then spent forever on these pages:

Most of the time I sketch something out but then when I actually want to make it, I think "this is too much to draw. I can probably combine these two and these two panels" and end up drawing less.

@Evan Here here! If anything I always laze out and draw less. I got three series to run, I can't make everything into a masterpiece.

The only times I go the extra mile is in establishing shots since I feel those need more details to feel lived in. I did these two last week.

I always try to do the bare minimum when it comes to my comics, but every once in awhile I'll try to put in a little more effort than my strip deserves.

Drawing too much sounds like a real and true interest in what you do. That's awesome.

I'm more of the opposite, where I planned on drawing and then wake up realizing I fell asleep.

Oh yeah. I've had a few instances where I've finished inking and coloring a panel only to decide that I want to change the whole thing up. I end up putting the old art in a hidden folder and starting up again. Such a pain sometimes...

This one panel on my first big project was really bad. I needed 3 shots at it.

As a writer I cut out a lot of stuff while I'm editing. Sometimes they're pretty lengthy passages that represent a lot of work and research.

I usually have a simple idea but when I draw it, I always feel I need more and more. https://tapas.io/episode/813776 This page is super simple idea. He gets a headache and then hears voices, but I wanted to give it more character. I really enjoy making panels for simple actions/ideas.

Originally, I wrote Jackie Welldrop to be a top-down style comic, but decided I hated it after the third page.

I like my second choice.
There is TONS of little mess ups like this and dropped story lines,
even tho I mostly write each pages as I draw it.

One of the professionals at a con I attended said I needed to give more love and details to my backgrounds. So I went from this:

Pretty much every page of Lemongrass. I can't say that I didn't intend for it to be a detailed comic, but I will say that no matter how many times I do it, I still don't quite understand the gravity of 'hey, let's fill half this page with a cityscape' until I have to actually draw the thing.

Yup I had that issue when I was drawing the first panel of my comic. It was supposed to be simple but I over did it a wee bit

Loads of times I just cut out legs or some other pieces of characters in case I ever feel the need to change that. ^_^'

Just wanted to say these are all so amazing!! Love them all! I can tell so many people put in a lot of love into the details of their comics. ^^

Considering that my sketches are very willy-nilly, yes, I always end up doing a lot more when I ink. Like, when I sketch out a bunch of trees for example, they're just random scribbles on paper. When I ink them, though, I take care to make each canopy visible. In a wider sense, my series Biophilia is a major example of me drawing more than I was planning, since it was only supposed to be a one-shot, self contained story but evolved into a multi-chapter arc.
