I currently made two flags for my comic. They appear in the Rose 03:
The first is the flag of the Valar Empire, the country in which my story takes place. I based the design on the austro-hungarian flag because the empire is vaguely inspired on that shit show of a state. The emblem on the flag is of a griffon holding stocks of wheat. They symbolize the fertile land that is home of that dominant ethnic group and the griffon: the military power that enabled all those conquests.
The second one is the flag of the Abyss, a semi independent region within the empire that was mostly left alone for hundreds of years since underground caves are not known for their arable land. The flag is the personal heraldry of the ruling ducal family. It features an olm (considered the larval form of dragons), Two traditional daggers, and the spiral things are remnants of their previous heraldic symbols: ferns. The weird format of the flag is due to the fact that in the Abyss, there is no wind to blow flags and the fact that they are still part of a larger empire, so adopting a more conventional flag could be interpreted as sedition.
