I ask this because I'm honestly kind of worried about the website's comics. The amount of comic creators leaving seems to have leveled off now, but I'm worried that what remains might not be enough for the website. A few decent comics are still uploading to SJ, but I can't imagine the foot traffic pulled in by them is enough to be sustainable, especially since several also have mirrors elsewhere. And I highly doubt they can hold their own on just their exclusives. So I feel like this company, who clearly don't care about the community, can easily cut their losses and shut down the whole thing. Joining Inkblazers in the overall internet dustbin.
So my worry is what'll happen to older comics that still are tied down to SJ. I can't imagine this company keeping a entire archive of the site. And even then, for how long? Remember how there used to be a Vine archive? Well, it seems like it went away about two years after it went up. So you can't rely on archives like these forever.
My biggest worry is with comics that the creator is no longer active. And it's not like you can contact them easily, as there's no PM system, notification of when a comment is made, or links to social media on their profile. Just hope they put it in their description, links captured by Wayback Machine before the update still work, or by some miracle they see a comment.
I don't mean to start panic, but I feel like it's something that should be thought about. Archiving comics ourselves perhaps, or contacting authors on the matter. I feel like if we're to rate a SJ shutdown between possible, probable, or imminent, I feel we're very much on possible.
So, while we're on this, which comics do you like that'd you'd put priority on saving?
