Any Aussies here will remember this from last year. I expect the same probably happened in NZ too.
So, last year on ANZAC Day (a very special Remembrance Day for Australia and New Zealand), all of the Dawn Services were cancelled due to COVID, and we were encouraged to do tiny Dawn Services in our driveways. Light little candles, play recordings of The Last Post, do the 1 minute silence, read the Ode... That sort of thing. Collaborate with the neighbours as to who does what. It was lovely, very communitarian.
I played The Last Post on the trumpet, which made my street feel very special indeed - they got an actual TRUMPET, none of the other streets had a TRUMPET - and my neighbours have been pestering me to do the same this year.
I've been trying to let them down gently, because Perth has been COVID-free for months, and there are real Dawn Services happening. Also, I have a jazz gig later that day, and I don't want to be awake at the crack of dawn.
Until an hour ago, when it was announced there's been community transmission from a quarantine hotel, and we're locking down for three days. Maybe more, if it spreads. Oh, and no Dawn Services, because lockdown, so our Premier is encouraging us to all do a driveway Dawn Service again. (Also, no jazz gig. Dang.)
...Guess who's dusting off her trumpet, now? I suppose the neighbours got their wish!
