I'll always hold a special fondness for Naruto's chunin exams since that was like the first one I saw.

MAR's holds similar impact, since that was the first full manga series I collected around the same time and ended on a great tournament arc!

Loved Fairy Tail's Grand Magic Games arc.

And lately (late last year), I played this really great indie game "Battle Chef Brigade" that's effectively structured around a big Tournament.

I like it when a story has a Rewatch value, for example when a story has an epic plot-twist and had lots of hints one person would not normally notice, but when you rewatch a story, you start to notice those hints or subtle early cameos.

To use the TV Tropes names, Not So Stoic and Break the Haughty are my favorite tropes of all time. Breaking down the emotional walls of an otherwise stoic or arrogant character is a lot of fun, but I have to restrain myself from doing it too often or it loses impact, lol.

I'm a sucker for two characters who dislike each other only to slowly come round. Doesn't even have to be a romance. I like seeing them discover things about each other and eventually change their minds.

^ This is one of my absolute favorite things too.

I also like overpowered antiheroes or secondary characters who are usually chilling out on the sidelines, but occasionally have moments of sheer badassery when they finally decide to unleash their powers. Even better if they're a vigilante character, or come to the rescue of the underdogs at a pivotal moment.

Some other slightly less specific ones:

• Grumpy grumps, especially if they get embarrassed or flustered easily.
• Strong and silent, seemingly aloof characters. Simple, but I've always had a soft spot for this one.
• Graceful melancholic characters, or characters with a bright, optimistic personality but loads of inner angst.

@AmysGames The Not So Stoic instances are also great, when executed well, it's good character insight and tension to see what pushes the stoic to act out of character

Not for comics, but in TV shows, specifically voice actresses with super strong broadway voices are what get me
I also like the shy/fragile kid who is secretly a total badass (and pottymouth!)
And big tough dude who shows his love in the subtlest (but most powerful) of ways

My favourite tropes: the loud mouthed tough guy who always speaks what everyone is afraid to say; the femme fatale who is actually a secretly sensitive person; the overly passionate, sarcastic, and prideful failure of a person.

the character who seems like a total robot/psychopath but is actually super sweet and sensitive
I have a friend who's EXACTLY like this, I think it's charming as hell so she's one of the inspirations for my characters

ooh boy I love the femme fatale trope... Actually any trope where somebody tries too hard to come off as tough or mysterious but is actually a teddy bear, I like it

I love the kind of stuff where you get rewarded with tons of hints and call-forwards on a second viewing! It’s why I have such a love/hate relationship with reveals and twists, since I love the rewatch bonuses but I find that a lot of the time big game-changers remove or sour what I originally liked about something.

Anyways, one of my ultimate guilty pleasure tropes is when a character is extremely mean/wacky/confident/whatever but it turns out they’re actually just covering up their raging insecurity and self-loathing. Weirdly enough I’m not really into jerk with a heart of gold and other similar stuff.

I am a sucker for "Earn Your Happiness" tropes -- wherepeople who actually have character development end up overcoming the pain they endured in the story (or at least begin to), and they're definitely at a better place at the end.

I know this is often used for romance (where two characters who mutually love each other end up together), and I love that too. But often, for me, it's when the parent who was spending the whole story saving their kid ends up seeing them safe and sound and just rushes to hug them and cries it out.

and the unreliable protagonist trope. letting the readers have to establish their own timeline / sequence of events because the story is from the point of view of an unstable character or a character prone to lying to the readers.

Honestly, I LOVE the overly comedic villains.

Kamoshida from Persona 5, the one guy at the end of Tokyo Ghoul's first season...I love the hilarious villainy.
