Well, first of all I believe that if you have a story, can write and draw it then you can totally work solo without having to worry about compromising other people, be it with the breaks you take, if it's an unpaid or paid partner and such.
On my case, I don't create stories. I just draw them (Sketches, ink, color, characters, backgrounds, promotional art and I also take care of the lettering and the webcomic panelling.)
The authors of the stories I work for provide me a script done by themselves, some are accompanied by a storyboard (no need of great artistic skills), so I have a clear idea about what they have in mind.
Basically, we're just duos of people (Author/Writer and Artist). Personally speaking I don't understand big teams where you have a writer, a main artist, assistants that idk what they do, I see some of them are background artists or flat colorists, but if you're the author basically you have to split payments or pay more to each member of your group, and basically, you'll have to communicate with several people at the time to make sure everyone has the same idea and is walking towards the same path, as well... more heads, more creative differences if you ask me. Even if I try to not participate on that matter, I just do what the authors tell me they want for their comic.
Either way, you're going to stress out if you have too many responsabilities or if you have too many people around. If you need to talk about your story, you can always do it with friends or other authors within the community, many do it without being a team and communities are for brainstorming together, debating or trying to figure out stuff for their own stories. I believe those that are too afraid to interact with authors be it because they are "afraid someone may stole their ideas", they aren't ready to show a story to the world, and said story won't be ready to be read if the author doesn't let some feedback come it's way.
