Ok, I know this is weird as I'm already a professional artist but hear me out

I'm correcting the story heavily but here it is in its beginning https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/meis-war/episode-1-prologue/viewer?title_no=205189&episode_no=216

I have a story that is heavily inspired in chinese culture, though I also have roman, japanese, and a weird european middle age part lol It's imaginary and I like having elements, people, clothes from everywhere.

But I lack the knowledge and maybe even a design sense, that a native Chinese would have. I have researched as much as possible (and I continue to do so) as I admire how beautiful this culture is. I avoid religious elements obviously and try to be respectful. I read a lot, watch documentaries, videos about it, etc. (I have to balance it with my war research though)

Now, I think the comic would look so much more beautiful if somebody with the knowledge were to help me design the clothes, the buildings or just correct me or show me the way.

Maybe you wouldn't, but I'm asking for a friend here ^^ Also I have some questions (just a couple) about how delicate or not can I be with some historical inspirations.

Idk if anybody would respond to this and Idk If I would find someone with that heritage here... But I thought I would at least try.

Also let me know, what would you like in your ideal collaboration. What can I do for you?

Hmmm.....if you seek knowledge of chinese aesthetic, you could search for references. Google for armor designs, civilian clothing, noble clothing, statues, architecture, etc......This could help you with the visual elements you seek.

That's a good suggestion! Thanks!!

Oh I definitely do that, especially the Tang Dynasty, shows. I love Pinterest. I think I lack confidence but I shouldn't >-< Maybe I'll delete this thingy.

Btw happy to talk to you again after long ^^

Yeah, it's been a while.

Guess sometimes research may take longer, specially if you aim for accuracy. Wish you the best on your research!

Yes it has ^^

And yes - Thank you!!
I don't aim for accuracy but still, I'll just do my best!

Will begin this with a word that I am not Chinese, but I spent a few years studying in China and a bit of enthusiast.
While your setting is obviously Chinese-inspired, IMHO it's obviously fantasy enough to not worry about designs too much?
The only thing I'd say is I think royal women design kinda looks too plain, they wear one colour dresses that look more inspired by European dress and their clothing doesn't look much different from the common women in another chapters. If you will continue the palace plot, maybe it would be nice to consider making them more pompous, adding more colors and patterns ^^
As @DiegoPalacios said, look for more references, you'll find aplenty on Pinterest! Believe in yourself, you're doing great!
Also I skipped through the comic, but I haven't got any obvious difference between two empires. Are they both Chinese-inspired?

Not Chinese, but living in China with a Chinese partner for the last 15+ years. If you have specific questions, I’d love to help with reference or opinion, just send me a private message...
Oh, and one thing to add about Chinese culture: it’s really really diverse, more than people think, so there’s definitely stretch you can use; but it’s double edged, because some very accurate Chinese elements might look anything but Chinese for today’s audience (including for modern Chinese audience that sometime “forget” their own cultures!)

I love you're a china enthusiast too! I really want to connect and learn more about it.

Your final question was so insightful. Obviously people get confused when I do the two countries so similar. I
made so many mistakes in 2018, both Kingdom being Chinese inspired + other cultures. It is not enough to distinguish both countries... Besides me doing so much fantasy.

Ah but most of the ladies in the comic are maids, and I go their custome from Fan Bingbing in "The Empress of China" (cool show) though I don't remember how much, I changed if anything.

I 100% plan to do the art more detailed! Though it strikes me as odd that advice that many are giving, as most people comment doing simpler style for comics rather than detailed. I'm so thankful for all of it, really ^^

Your profile icon is so pretty, loved the artwork ^^ I shall look into it.

Thank you for your kindness! It must be wonderful to learn so closely.
What you mention is so interesting, as it's such a rich culture not even them can learn all of it? That's when I feel me out of everyone can't learn all of it either lol

I'll send a short list of at least 3 questions in private then ^^

I will consult with you in a moment. Again thank you!

I have a friend from china, but contacting her is hard with the censorship laws. There are a few site you can use to talk with people in china. WeChat (though they have changed it and its really difficult to create an account now) and QQ international. They are both hard to make accounts in for whatever reason, but that is the best I can do for site where you may be able to contact people there.

It does help! Thank you so much :')
I had heard from Wechat but didn't know It could be international. Gonna check it out

Hello! I’m Chinese diaspora (read: look Chinese, but actually know very little about it, but can pass on making mistakes because of my heritage; and because of that, confident enough to make a xianxia comic, https://tapas.io/series/romance-in-White-Flower-Garden3 and I’m an asian of asia btw, just not prc/hk/taiwan)

Since your genre is fantasy after all, so I guess you’re not going for historically correct route, have you looked up on game arts?
Look for Chinese concept artists, Ruan Jia for example, and look for Chinese artists from prc/taiwan/hong kong, or at least other asian countries.

Prior from my very recent jump into comic, I used to do game illustrations. My fellow artist friends (in my country) and myself divide our clients’ tastes into 2 categories, east or asian, and west, europe/us. Even when they asked for realistic style, the two asked for very different things.
(i.e. asian clients demand very pretty, very feminine facial features, despite the race, of their female characters; while the western clients... as long as they look cool)
Is this asian aesthetic taste that you feel you lack? Because you can have it if you want. It’s learn-able.
