Comics have a stricter standard for what is app appropriate, since it's visual. Novels you can get away with pretty much anything so long as your story has a plot.
Content guidelines here. Sexual content is better outlined, but as for violence: you will only run the chance of app ban if the uncensored violence is "Realistic portrayals of people or animals being killed" (this I had quoted to me when my series Heavy Horns was shadowbanned from the app).
As for people's reactions
I say disregard those complainers since they disregarded your content warning.
My novel gets pretty explicit and I put up a disclaimer in the first episode talking about some of the content people may find problematic. Haven't gotten any complaints.
Don't feel like you have to over-censor yourself aside from the hard rules of the site and and if you want to comply with the app stores. So long as you feel your audience is mature enough to handle the topics covered in your series, you should be fine. Had your series attracted a bunch of 13 year-olds though, then perhaps the filters should stay.
